Professional Training Question

Hi,

I'm wanting to get a week's training from my employer costing between 4 and 5 grand, for which I would apparently need to sign a document stating that I would have to pay back a proportion of this amount, should I leave the company before a year after its completion. Also I would need to pay for the training in full should I fail the exams.

However a manager where I work (I'm a contractor so it isnt the same employer) is adamant that no such obligation exists. While there may be some kind of moral reason to pay them back, any document signed would have no legal value and I cant be forced to pay anything. Although I guess, references being important, I may have that incentive as well to stick to what I sign.

Anyone out there have any ideas how this works?

 Thanks
