Hello Viviane, good idea to begin lessons of Puertorican salsa. You have two possibilities in Geneva:

1) The biggest (puertorican) salsa school in Geneva and considered as the best for many salseros in Geneva is Salsavirus Dance Studio (http://www.salsavirus.com/). The school also organises several regular parties focused on this style of salsa, very important if you want to practice what you have learned during the lessons.

2) Another school in Geneva is K'Danse (http://www.kdanse.ch/lausanne/cfm/results_cours.cfm).

I hope this will help you in your choice. Don't hesitate to contact me if you need more information about the "Puertorican Salsa World" in Geneva, in Suisse Romande or in Switzerland.

No it's not. It's afro-cuban. NY and Columbian are just recent twists they did not invent it in any way.

I think there is a confusion.... Salsa is not an "invention". Salsa is the result of several Caribbean music styles, mainly from Cuba (son montuno, guaracha, chachacha, mambo, etc.) and latin jazz. It appeared in New York in the late 30's, but became popular in the 60's with musicians and bands like Ray Barreto, Tito Puente, Bobby Cruz, Hector Lavoe, La Fania, El gran Combo, etc. etc. etc. They came from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Republica Dominicana mainly. For me, this is the best salsa ever, the one in the 60's. But is just a preference of course. Great musicians from other countries appeared.

Concerning salsa dancing style: Taking in consideraion that Salsa appeared in New York, this is probably the original style. Taking in consideration the roots, probably Cuban will be the the original. Porto Rican and Colombia styles are great. Personally I don't think that one style is better than the other; is just a matter of preferences. If you learned salsa outside a latin country, probably the style is very important. If you grew up with salsa, no matter which style it is, you will enjoy and will be able to dance with someone from another country having great fun. After all music and dance are made to enjoy them!!

I am from Colombia, from Cali and of course I love Grupo Niche, Guayacan, Fruko and Joe and I prefer to danse Cali Style, but I enjoy salsa from everywhere and love dance all styles.

Sorry for the long posting but salsa is one of my passions.

Great day to all salseros.

Hello Viviana, finally someone who knows what SALSA is and where it comes from!

(I don't know why some people thinks that they know everything about salsa after just having followed some dancing lessons.)

For your information I'm a Salsa DJ and I'm spinning at Salsa Virus next Friday, I'm sure you will love a lot this party because I play ONLY "SALSA" (in fact it's Mambo, Guaguanco, Latin Jazz, Guajira, and Cha Cha Cha) of the 60s and 70s from New York, Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela, Peru, Puerto Rico. Hope to see you there.

Colombian / Cali style is not very common here (don't even know  whether it's taught in Geneva ?) but you may find some Colombian dancers in MàD for instance. I've only a few opportunities to try it, but love it already ! ...
