I have a query regarding mobile connections.

A friend of mine went to Swisscom and Sunrise stores. He was asked to give a security deposit of 1000 and 750 Chf respectively in each of these stores in order to acquire a mobile connection. Please let me know if this is a common practise and what is the rationale behind this security deposit for a mobile connection.
