Questions about mobile phones

Hey all,

I am currently still under contract with AT&T in the US and assumed I wouldn't be able to have my phone unlocked, but a bit of research shows that there is a chance it is possible. Apparently it works for some, but not everyone.

Needless to say, it's rather difficult to get around without a phone and I was wondering that if my request for an unlock is denied, what are my best options for something temporary while I am here? I just need a simple phone, mostly just for sms while I am out and about. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

hey there

Carriers will only give you good phones if you subscribe for a 1 or 2 year plan...which in Switzerland can be quite expensive.

If you re staying here for a short time only you d better go for a mid range Android phone that can do pretty much anything. you can such models in all mobile phone shops. as of the phone line, If you dont talk a lot but are more of an sms, mobile internet person then I think Sunrise prepaid is the most convenient since it allows you to buy sms packages (100) or mobile internet packages (250 Mb or 1 Gb)

Some of these phones purchased as part of a prepaid package are carrier-locked.  Check carefully before you commit.

Thanks everyone. I'm in luck this time and just found out AT&T will unlock my phone even though I have over a year left on my contract! :)

In that case I would go for a prepaid card from e.g. Aldi or Migros.

If you want to compare abonnements and prepaid, here is a ling to comparis, that clearly shows there analysis that Aldi, Lebara, Coop Prix guarantee, and M-Budget prepaid are cheeper then anything else.

The most expensive is Swisscom, Orange, and Triotel.

I also seen a very interesting deal with

They have a booth at the Fed de Geneve, Jardin Angalis. Which includes a prepaid with a phone 'Nokia Lumia'.

In case it doesn't work, just go to any prepaid carrier (for example Lebara), last year some of my guests just bought a 20CHF phone credit with basic phone (just enough to call / SMS) and left it at my place after they left. I can even give you the phone for free if you want, anyway I don't use it and SIM card expired.

Oh really, Yoann? I haven't found a SIM card yet for my phone, but I might take you up on that phone offer if I don't get this going soon.

Yes really, but anyway they are offered when you buy a SIM car with some starting credit.

My friends got it for free with a new 20CHF SIM card at Lebara stand in Geneva festival, they said they were tourists and didn't show any ID (which is usually requested for SIM registration), just had to dicuss a bit with seller

Which phone do you have ? Whats your mobile model ? did you call your service provider to deliver unlocking service to your phone ?  OR did you approach any of the online vendors ? In my experience, many of the providers provides unlocking service in online at reasonable cost .you can get unlocking service from them to unlock your mobile .
