Questions regarding insurances for "frontaliers"

I started working in Geneva approx. two weeks ago, still having my residence abroad and fine with my home country insurances, bank account etc.

Now it looks like I found an apartment in France and I will move there by end of this month.

And I have several questions regarding insurances and would appreciate if you share your experiences...

Health insurance:

Being a frontalier, what would be the best option - Swiss or French health insurance? Any specific companies to recommend or to avoid? (I'm not looking for the cheapest, but the best option in regards to value for money, preferrably including dental treatment expenses.)

Liability Insurance / assurance R.C. and household insurance / assurance mobilière:

Any recommendations? I assume I will have to pick French ones?

Thank you!!

Thank you, Tea, for your reply.

Unfortunately, the link to a recent thread doesn't help, and also after reading the other threads I found before posting (I actually did! :-)) I am none the wiser... :-(

I followed your links (2. and 3.), but perhaps I would first need to understand the basics of both health insurance systems to start catching these things.

(Un-?)Fortunately, in Germany the compulsory health insurance was completely clear and easy - different companies, yes, but all at same costs and (almost same) service.

4.: Does anybody know what Tea is referring to? What's the name of this tax, it is French or Swiss? (If it's Swiss, I cannot imagine this would be legal - either they accept foreign health insurance or they don't?!)

We've just moved to France (after staying in Switzerland for a year) and went through the same thing. Originally I was on Studentcare and my husband and son were with Assura. To convert to frontalieres Assura wanted to charge my husband almost double per month - more than 600 chf!

Instead, we went to Credit Agricole and got frontalieres health insurance there for all 3 of us for around 400 euros per month. It includes everything in France, cantonal hospitals in GE (so not la tour, for example) but also dental which we never had before.

4. You might want to also find out more on the following....I have been told that there is supposed to be a 'new' tax being introduced to frontaliers in the next 1-2 yrs. Apparently an additional 8% tax will be applied to Frontaliers if they have French health insurance...? but not if you have Swiss/International health insurance policy...

I haven't found any articles explaining this (4.) myself. So if anyone can provide more info on this I would also be grateful."

(Is there an option to delete a part of the quoted text - the one you're not referring to - if you choose "reply with quote"!?)

I found something about this. As of 1st June 2014, frontaliers shall no more be able to pick a private health insurance but will have to choose either French CMU or Swiss LAMAL:

Here's the website (in French).

Thank you, Claire!

It's good to have a name of an insurance provider.

I think I will go to France this afternoon and go to one of the CA agencies to get some more information as all information on the different websites doesn't really help if you don't know the basics...

I'm sorry, Tea B, I think I was confused by the word "bank" and therefore didn't understand that CA actually also offers health insurance...

Regarding the changes in 2014:

Apparently it has not yet been written in stone, they're still signing petitions against this. So let's hope for the best!
