My boyfriend's brother recently lost his job and was told by a consultant at the unemployment office that it would be very difficult to find a job as he is now 45!! So my questions is this, does anyone know of a recruitment agency in Geneva which specialises in 'senior' recruitment? I remember reading an article in the 20 minute newspaper about a job agency doing just that.

At 45 he is NOT a senior!
Hey, where are we going here? Living up to 100, but supposed to be a senior at 45 !?

Officially no, 45 is not a senior but here in Switzerland it gets more and more difficult to get a job after the age of 40! Discrimination is alive and kicking!

I haven't heard of that agency but if you find it please let me know.
Your comment was very true. It used to be that experience counted for something (25 years in my case) but now the age limits seem to be getting younger for more and more positions advertised. Without joking, I don't think we're far off the point when 35 will be classed as 'too old'.
I also think a lot of companies (when they're not outsourcing) are relying on a constant stream of interns with false promises of work at the end of it. The unfortunate thing is a lot of companies are missing out on a very strong talent pool from older employees but are either too stupid to know it or too focused on short term gains on keeping staffing costs down.
My plan B is to dye my hair back to black, get botox and lie on my CV I was born in 1980!

Yeah....Kind of misses the point but thanks anyway.
When I lost my job at the age of 48, after several months of fighting real hard to find a job and be able to feed my still young kids (career woman at heart, I waited till the last minute to become a mother), I just had to look the truth in the face: why should a comapny hire an expensive, almost senior professional (thanks to the LPP cost that burdens both employer and employee), when it could just as well hire a young graduate, pay him/her a much lower wage, and wait a couple of years till he/she aquires the same kind of expertise (so they think, but nothing replaced many years of field experience). So yes, one is old at the age of 45 and over, in our beautiful Geneva.

I've been trying to combat this by keeping my salary expectations reasonable and staying out of management. I work in IT which is known for a fair bit of age discrimination. On the other hand, the infrastructure support role that I fulfill has incredible potential for destruction if I make a bad decision. For these kinds of roles, companies want people who are "seasoned" and have the wisdom to not push the wrong button at the wrong time...
It'll be interesting to see what happens. Early next year I'll be a job seeker for the first time since late 2002.

Well Rich, with those abs I wonder why you need the Botox, but I am sure you will get away with the lie.
As for me, I was already feeling old after experiencing the Geneva social scene. Now I am too scared to even think about looking for a job!

I am looking myself for a job right now and I just came across to this ad that may interest your boyfriend's brother. You can find it in jobup.ch ref. n. 910212
They are looking for an executive assistant aged between 35-45
Anyway in these days I've seen some adverts requiring that age so... I think he just need to look. And be VERY VERY patient, here everything seems just sooo slow o.O

Interesting reply and unfortunately very true. So what did you do, retrain or start your own business? I read that more and more people in their 40's and 50's are starting their own businesses in the UK. Am wondering if this is also beginning to happen in Switzerland.

I indeed started my own business: I am a freelance French teacher, founder and CEO of Learn French Geneva, I now outsource excess demands to 3 other teachers in Geneva and Vaud. Business is expanding and I am even thinking of marketing my "ready-to-teach" kit. So there is a life after 45 in Geneva after all
. And by the looks of developments ahead of me in my PR job, I could even say that life does start after 50! So, to all you old timers/seasonned/ outdated/old: enjoy whatever comes, whenever it comes, coz "things always happen for a reason "
