Referendum cantonal 14 June 2015 about housing

For those of you that have the right to vote (Swiss citizens or residents in GE for at least 8 years), there is a referendum cantonal on 14 June to approve a new law for real estate.

ASLOCA, the Swiss association of tenants, is asking everybody to vote NO.

According to ASLOCA, the new law, proposed by politicians homeowners to speculate about the price of housing in Geneva, is aimed at removing rent ceiling and regulations and to make tenants less protected by the law.  This will result in much higher rents and less availability of apartments in Geneva.

You might have seen recently in newspapers and on the street some ads from unknown associations which allegedly "protect the rights of tenants" and ask people to vote Yes.  ASLOCA issued a warning that these are fake associations set up by homeowners.

These "tenants' associations" say that the new law will allow the transformation of empty offices into apartments.  This is already possible under the old law; the new law will just suppress the control of the rent on the newly renewed apartments, so that the prices will be allowed to skyrocket.

Don't get fooled!

Just a note that, in fact, only Swiss citizens may vote in referendums on the federal or cantonal level. The 8 year residency only permits voting at the communal level.

So, the Yes won.  Congratulations to those who voted Yes.  Now we'll just have to watch as the price of a decent apartment hits 4000 CHF/month.

According to ASLOCA, this law is the first one of a long series aimed to destroy the (already almost inexistant) tenants' rights.
