Regie Salary Requirements

Hey guys,

Just so that I am clear as I am looking for a new apartment soon, the regies expect your GROSS salary to be at least three times the rent right?

Thats what I remember seeing, but there have been some urban myths like 4 times your net salary flying around.

That's all the info I need - I know how the rest of my dossier goes :-)

Best,

Andy

P.S. Oh and - if someone has a friend who is about to give up their apartment or something like that, don't hesitate to send me a PM :-)

well one rule about the regies that there are no rules...if i were you I won't worry much about the salary...just worry about their internal secrets and long waiting list and piston recommended potential tenants...I came 11 april from nyc and still fighting to get a place...good luck

Hey, while I agree that in general the regies are mafias - this isn't the first time I've been going through this and I understand the process.

I'm not talking about an unspoken rule, I am referring to an actual rule regarding to your salary/rent ratio, which can make you ineligible to get an apartment - that's what I'm asking for here.

Best,

Andy

P.S. You've been here less than a month - if you think that's a long time to look, unfortunately I think you'll be surprised exactly how bad it is. Good luck to ya!

There is no such "official rule" or law. It's the current "practice."

Same question, but in the opposite direction. Anyone know of a CAP or Maximum salary to rent ratio?

Thanks.

the regie is more concerned with the ability to pay regularly rather than the actual salary level. for example, a business owner who is independent (not salaried, per se) albeit with a large yearly tax declaration may not be as "sure" as a retired person with a fixed monthly income.....forever! of course they can not give notice if they die!

Sorry to say, but it's early days yet. I took around 5 months to find a place 3 years ago (and it was only a sublet), and another 5 months (this time in my name, thank god) when I got kicked out of the first place.

Just to keep other people from pooing their pants when looking for a place.

What seems to have happened to Matt is really the worst of the worst. Finding a sublet / or a room was a question of a week for me when I moved here and I had a not all too high level job back then.

Finding a place with a regie isn't easy, but 5 months is by far the most brutal stretch I have heard of so far.

Anyway, when first getting here you are best of targeting sublets - places with regies really are pretty unattainable here if you

a) Are new and don't have people supporting you (people recommending you to take over their place, or people that have ins with the regies etc)

b) If you don't speak French

c) If the two above apply and you don't have a relocation agency (which will cost you an arm and a leg)

I'm giving myself four months time, which is how long I have until my current lease is done.

Normally, that'll do, even in Geneva.

Best,

Andy
