Registering arrival with OCP for the first time after nearly 2 years in Geneva

Hi everyone,

My story is, I am a non-EU national and l arrived in Geneva almost 2 years ago with a visa, firstly as an intern within the UN and now l am a consultant, still in the system. Its been almost 2 years and l never knew that l had to register my arrival at OCP. I only found this out recently when l wanted to do something at the Geneva Cantonal Health Insurance Office that they could not find me in the 'system' because my work permit (CDL) is organised through the Swiss Permanent Mission to the UN and hence the two systems (Swiss Permanent Mission) and OCP are not connected (I assume). I have been living (renting) a room in someones flat all this time. I just want to prepare myself before visiting the OCP office. So my questions are;

1. Is there a penalty for announcing my arrival late at OCP ? (In all honesty, l was not aware l had to do this)

2. Is there a fee to be paid for announcing such arrival (I could not find this info on the OCP website)?

3. I have been renting in someone elses flat, with regards to residential address, do l need any documentation from the person to register myself as living at their adress?

4. Are there any tax implications for the person l have been renting from?

Hi Erick,

Your questions are pretty specific and I think you should discuss them with a lawyer specializing in work permits / immigration or at the very least with the OCP (hard to reach by phone but they do reply to emails pretty quickly).

Otherwise you run the risk of being un-pleasantly surprized when you go...

Good luck,

Oded

Hi Erick, i'm assuming you work for UN and have valid permit. I don't think you need a lawyer. I think you just need to go through the process of registering yourself since in Switzerland. I heard from friends who work for UN and Cern that it's not mandatory to register here. Many people choose to live in France.

1) I don't think so. First, ask your colleagues who register in CH how it works for them. Then go to OCPM to ask. If you get an unfavourable answer, go another time and ask a different person.

2) Unfortunately, nothing is free in Switzerland. You need to go OCPM to find out which applicatiom form to fill and how much it costs.

3) yes, if you want to register with this address. You need him to write you a letter saying you are living with him. If the mailbox doesn't have your name, you need to write C/O to this person in your address.

4) No. Just make sure he doesn't get into any trouble with his real estate agent.

Best thing is to go to the OCPM office personally and explain to them from A to Z. Better to fix things asap rather than taking advice from colleagues etc.

One day if you decide to become a Swiss by naturalisation, the number of years living in Swiss counts.

Good luck!

Thank you all for the suggestions.

UPDATE: I went to OCPM to ask for info regarding my issue and it turns out l was not in the wrong. Apparently, it was not mandatory for me to register my arrival at OCPM as l hold a Carte de Legitimation (CDL). Its only that l needed to do something with at the Cantonal Health Insurance Office and they asked me to go to OCPM, had l not needed to do anything with the Cantonal Health Insurance Office, I would not need to do anything at OCPM so l guess l was worried over nothing.

Thanks again.
