Rock Climbing
I am interested in learning how to rock climb/boulder while living in Geneva.  Does anyone know of a good school where I can get lessons in English and not have to pay for a private lesson?  I also need the lessons to include the gear.  I would like to learn somewhere in the Jura...

Thanks!!!

Jennifer

hi jennifer,

you can take courses with the club alpin swiss,

geneva city: http://www.cas-geneve.ch

carouge : http://www.cas-le-gag.ch

but i often took friends to climb for their first time, i don't think you really need classes to enjoy the cliffs ...

Jen,

Pika's advice is good: you can go to a school, but it will cost you an arm and a leg, and it's not a huge help.

I'd recommend maybe going for just 1 time with a pro instructor, to get the feel of it. Then, just go and learn by doing. I think Pika might be persuaded to take you climbing...(-:

 The school where I work has a "course" every term, the next one to start in September, at the climbing wall at the school. All the gear neccessary is there and we're a pretty small group so youse gets a lot of personal instruction.

Its Sfr. 200 for 10 sessions of an hour each. Be prepared to go for drinks afterwards.

 Hi Damaris,
I work at the LGB (La Grande Boissiere) campus of the International School of Geneva. That's at the tram stop Grange Canal. I haven't received notice that they are starting the class yet. Usually it takes a few weeks after term has started, which will be on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

 Hi Mike.

I'm super interested also.  Could you post some info on the forum once the classes have been setup?

Thanks

 @Pika and Nir

To my knowledge, last week alone, there were 10 serious accidents in the Swiss alps with 8 fatalities.

Have a read what the BBC had to say about the subject last week

 @mdiephuis

Are you aware that rock climbing (which Pika and Nir) is a different activity to hill walking (refered to in the BBC you mention)?

 @aerogeek pff, give me a break. The point remains the same.

Whether you are walking or climbing, the mountains can be a pretty unforgiving place, especially if ill equipped, or ill trained.

 Climbing Wall is starting this Tuesday, (tomorrow), Sept. 15 at the Middle School at the LGB Campus, tram stop Grange Canal. I checked and the course IS open to the general public, so come on everybody. It begins at 7.00 and goes until 8.00. Its a great wall and all the equipement, shoes, harness, etc is there. Great for beginners! Hope you see you there!

 Yes, this is a course for every Tuesday, except for one week in October. And I was wrong, it doesn't start until Tuesday, Sept 22!!!  So sorry!!   I've got a PDF file with the info but can't seem to attach it here. You've got another email?

 Hi girls and guys, if anyone of you is up for some indoor climbing in January still, pls let me know that would be great! Wouldl love to start with the menioned class right now but have a broken foot so will have to wait till Jan. I have the gear as I had already started and had a few tries about 2 years ago but then haven't gotten around to it for a while so am still pretty much a beginner.

Hi Mike. Thanks for the course info. I noticed the wall before when dropping my little girl off and have been wondering how to get access to it. I've missed the start of this course but do you know if there are any other times its open to the public?

Re: Rock Climbing

There is also the Geneva Climbing school, it has information about its adult courses here : http://objectifvertical.genevescalade.ch/html/cours.html. Main website here: http://www.genevescalade.ch/

The website is in French but I know 2 of the instructors and they are both bi-lingual and tell me they regularly get English only speakers and accommodating them is easy. Based on what I know of the 2 instructors the standard of tuition will be excellent and the school is closely linked to the climbing community in Geneva (they run the annual city bouldering and lead climbing competitiions).

Cheers

Sam

PS The courses are popular and fill quickly so plan and book ahead!
