Saleve - things to do with kids (4 and 8) at the top?

Hello,

We went to the Saleve once a few months ago, but apparently we missed a lot up there (caves, etc).  Is there any kind of map/guide to what's up there?  We're up for some gentle hikes if they lead us to interesting sights.  Looking online has not been very fruitful, so I'm looking for some tips.

thank!

Sylvia

I think the best is to buy the IGN top 25 map covering Saleve. It has the hiking trails. Another thing you and your children might like is to do geocaching (you need a gps device or a phone with gps for that) as there are quite many caches on Saleve (and other nice places in and aroung Geneva of course).

You can find a map of the Salève online here: http://www.geoportail.fr/?c=6.1,46.2&l=Scan%28100%29&z=10

I don't know what kids of this age are interested in, but among the things to see up there are the sentier botanique, the tour Bastian, the grotte du diable, the corraterie and the trou de la trine. Apart from this, there are of course a few spots that offer great views on the Alps.

Thanks Bjorn and Hedi.  Geocaching sounds like a great idea, we'll see how well that works with our phone.

Somebody mentioned a huge marble drop puzzle of some sort at a buddhist monastery on the Saleve...any hints as to where that might be?

The monastery is half way between the telepherique and the TV/radio tower on the Salève.

Sylvia,

I want to take my kid (4) up there as well. If your kids like some company next time, lemme know and we'll happily join.

Most of the caves are not easy to reach being in the cliff wall.  There is the grotte d'Orbojet through which the path up from Le Coin goes.  There is another one beyond la Croisette direction away from telepherique, sign posted (ptroably Grotte de Diable or something similar) exciting for young kids

Thanks again for all the info, folks.  We went yesterday, and the one thing your kids shouldn't miss is the amazing ball drop rube goldberg machine next to the buddhist monastery.  The kids were entranced.

for the next time, you can also go for the hunt of the Dahu.....   that mystical animal is also on the Salève...

I think I saw it a few times, near the allobroges camp, in the forest...

One thing your kids will have fun watching is paragliders taking off from Saleve's top.  There's a well-known spot for it, and you get a great view from there.

Strange I always thought a dahu was smaller and ran round hills in an anti-clockwise direction and that it was only haggis that ran clockwise. Both can be captured in the same fashion no matter which way they run.  You just stand below them and shout 'Look at the view behind you'. They turn round, fall over and tumble down the hill

actually male and female run round hills in different direction, if not, they would not be able to meet.....    ;-)

now if you have the occasion to see them copulate, I heard it was absolutetly spectacular. I never had the luck to see it by myself.

About Haggis, I had the opportunity to see a picture of a captured animal. Quite interesting.
