I think I may be the only one in Geneva who has not heard of this scam. But it was so convincing. A guy in front of me picked up a gold wedding ring and convinced me he had just found it. Of course the ring is a fake and he expects you to give him money..you keep the ring and he gets the money.

He got very nasty when I refused to take the ring, purely because I was scared. Luckily someone intervened.

THe guy told me people normally give them money as they convince them as they have no papers they cant go to the police or a gold shop. Of course most people think , that some poor person has lost their wedding ring! And take it to find the owner and give the guy a rewrd for his honesty!!!

So beware. Advice keep walking and do not touch the ring...

This is an update of an old trick, much favoured by the Roma. I’ve been approached by women as well as men.

I’m always careful not to touch the ring and if the ‘finder’ becomes insistent I become equally insistent that we must go to the Police Station together. This usually provokes some muttering (cursing ?) but they scarper.

This happened to me in Paris. The scammers were a couple. Being a NYer, I spotte it a mile away, just said a firm "NO!" and kept on walking.

This happened to me around rue des Bains last year. I hadn't heard of the scam but of course it looked suspicious. I offered to hand the ring in to a police station but not surprisingly the guy took it back, so I just walked off. Actually I was more concerned about being pickpocketed as it looked like a ruse to divert your attention.
