Hi guys, I just wanted to warn everybody, somewhere in Geneva, or in Spain-Valencia, where I was for vacation somebody scanned my credit card during the withdrawal. And then I wanted to pay saturday in Migros, and there was no money anymore. Somebody just cleared out my account. I am really shocked, I called the bank, they will get me the money back, but it takes at least one month! So my situation is terrible, I have 20 chf in my pocket... and no chance do get any money before the police inquiry is done. SO PLEASE BE CAREFULL! Somebody told me, that this is the problem of Visa cards. I don´t know.... Anyway, please anybody who knows about some babysitting or some small jobs for this week, where I could be cash, tell me. I am really desperate.

Was it a card from a Swiss bank?
Yes, I am dealing with them, but it will take one month, because it maybe happened in Spain, they have to audit it- in the cooperation with the spanish banks, where i did my withdrawal....

My card was skimmed last year after I withdrew money from a cash dispenser at a motorway service station in the south of France. Luckily it wasn't my primary account and only had a limited amount and no overdraft facility. The bank refunded me, but it could have been much more difficult as you have described.
Since then I try to only use cash dispensers inside a bank branch. It also makes sense to keep some money in different accounts if you can (not so easy as it used to be ... I have free / cheap accounts that I kept open from when I lived in the UK and the Netherlands).

Was it a card with the chip, or with just a magnet stripe?
We had similar case in Italy couple of years ago with the card with magnet strie only. After that we were told, that chipped cards are secure. Is it still true?

it was debit card, with chip, issued by a Dutch bank. It pays to use your cards as carefully as possible, home and away. Like I said, I now try not to use machines on the street as I would hope the ones inside the bank are checked more frequently by the staff and would be more difficult to tamper with.

other tip:
at the card reader, where you enter your card - really strongle wiggle the reader. normally when they skim - they need to put something in front of the real reader to skim it. if it is loose, or looks supecious, don't use it.
Cover the keypad - where ever you are - when you enter your code. Even if they skim your card, without the code it's useless.

I guess these card reader systems are being used by theives in Geneva (and likely other local places too) as a few weeks ago whilst waiting at Cornavin, I saw a Policeman walk up to a CFF ticket machine and check for a skimming insert as he passed by..
I usually try to have a pull at it before sticking my credit card in these days, just incase it "comes out"..

Lida: Chip-only cards without magnetic strip are safe from skimming; however, there are other possibilities of fraud.
Martin: Good advice, but there are nowadays tiny skimmers that fit in the card slot and are therefore impossible to notice.
As Martin suggested, always cover your hand while typing your PIN. Scammers need both digital data and PIN for the card to clone it, therefore they put a small pinhole camera to record you. However, sometimes they tamper with the keypad by covering it with a fake one with sensors to register the digits. Check for anomalies in the whole ATM and if something seems suspicious, avoid it.
Better use ATMs in protected areas such as inside banks, where they are less likely to be tampered. For instance, I would never use a bank card in the new TPG ticket machines.
Consider using cash for most of your transactions -- the more you use your card, the more you're likely to have problems.

I had my card skimmed here in Geneva, and as Chris suggested, the bank was fairly sure it happened at the railway station. Apparently the machines at the station are particularly vulnerable, so avoid using those with your card whenever possible. It would even be better to take an extra 5 minutes and go to the UBS at the station and take out cash to use in these machines.
