Coming from south-side Chicago, I always feel like the most dangerous person on the street in Geneva. It's always people giving me looks instead of the other way around... ;)

Do you mean martial arts, or comprehensive self-defense (awareness, use of improvised weapons, etc)?

Hi there,

there are "special" self-defence classes, but usually they are a rip-off in that they are limited in time and are commercially exploited.

Better to join a regular martial arts club with a regular attendance of women.

You may check www.sdkbudo.ch. Not much women in the Yoseikan section that I attend, but there are a regular bunch in the Ju-jutsu section. Ju-jutsu gives a lot of attention to practical self-defence.

There maybe other ju-jutsu clubs closer to your place.

Hope this helps,

There is a very good one in Meyrin, I can recommend it personally.

Is given in french, so good to have enough french so the course keeps rolling and to understand the anecdotes, to be able to introduce oneself sufficiently to tell one's own and listen to other people's stories if they have them etc.

Is given by ex-police officer, based loosely on Ju-jutzu. Is about being street-wise and avoiding or dealing with aggression and violence towards oneself from others. Are different days for adults and children, also thurs evenings especially for women only, also courses for the retired and also for the handicapped.

Ring Roger Perriard 079 402 62 80.

In purely english don't know of one, but if you haven't already done so, I'd ring and ask at the UN personnel dept, or the British Embassy.

Moe13,

If you are serious about a real self-defense course, there is an American instructor (former Navy seal) who is giving a weekend class north of London in November (closest course to us in CH). Total investment; course, flight and hotel will probably run you about CHF 1'300.

If you are interested, I can send you the link. Send me a PM

There are also a couple of DVD courses that you can get out of the States that are quite good as a start.

In any event, good luck.

forget all week-end course, you wont learn anything, when it comes down to self-defense it has to be repeated over and over again, because when you will use it you going to be scared / nerves and not to hurt you and ensure that you control the outcome the technique has to be perfect, if not and you do something stupid, you will probably be in a worse situation

A good system is Krav Maga, its contain both awareness and "non-violence" but you will train against unarmed combat but also armed combat (knife, gun etc), how you can use your surroundings.

I am trained in the military version of it, but there is a civil version where they cover self-defense in streets to self-defense in bars, cars etc.

I dont know any clubs in geneva, dont train it anymore ( the military version is only taught to military personal because it include attacks and also techniques with lethal outcome otherwise its the same) but just google it, and you will probably find a club.

I totally agrre with sandholm, you cannot learn self defense in a weekend course. Remember how often you don't have the right word at time when speaking a foreign language...you have to use it again and again.

Search for a good school. I for myself do Chinwoo Kung Fu and its very helpful.

Nearby you is that school: arts-martiaux.ch

try it....

I saw this and a voice said "post the Super Army Soldiers sequence from Extras". I tried to ignore it and do a bit of work, but the voice kept going. "Go on! Post the Super Army Soldiers sequence from Extras". It got louder and louder. So Sandholm: (a) I'm sorry about this; (b) I'm only posting it so the voice stops and I can get some work done; (c) I hope a ;) cuts it

Check here, http://www.krav-maga.ch/ there are several clubs in switzerland

Another thing I should point out but didnt do before. The civil version of Krav Maga is 100% self defense, you cant compete in it, its not a martial art, the main idea is if there is a fight you shall end it as fast as possible, with all means.

More info on the wiki, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krav_Maga

I also like this system because you will train in real situations, we actually got drunk a couple of times, there where several girls and they trained both in jeans sneakers but also in cocktail dress and high heels (no special clothes becaus you wont be wearing them when you have to use the system, I ended up using a jujutsu suite, because there fabric dont rip. ). We visited bars, parks at night, hurt (ok, simulated, like on armed tied to the body), disco lights, smoke, several attackers, against knifes, guns, bottles, chains, baseball bats, everything that can show up in real life. I would sum up the idees with Krav Maga as

1: You should not get hurt

2: Learn how to avoid a fight, but when you choose to fight you shall end the attak as fast as possible, without thinking of your opponent outcome. If you need to hurt him bad, well do it, he is the attacker and your objective is to ensure you life.

3: Use anything (objects, surroundings) to increase your chances and end the conflict fast.

cheers

thanks sandholm, unfortunately that was the site i found too, and they're the ones that start too early for me to attend!! :(

the krav maga system does look awesome in terms of its efficiency. having studied other styles (judo, goju ryu, wing chun and arnis) i prefer those that are the most effective rather than learning some giant body movement or kata which is of absolutely no use other than looking pretty (don't get me wrong, i fully respect the traditions of each art, but i want to be able to adapt it to current situations and not have it based on samurais fighting two thousand years ago!). if anyone knows of anything that could help it would be much appreciated. otherwise i will try to find another style with a similar aim.
