Hi
Are the classes held in English? My friend doesn't know French.
Hey Line!
I'm planning to check this one out very soon:
http://www.arts-martiaux.ch/shaolin/
The have children/adolescents/adults classes, don't seem to distinguish between men and women (should they?? ;-))
Judging from the website I doubt they hold classes in English though...

Actually, we are looking for self defense classes, more or less specifically for women, not martial arts classes. That's kind of two different types of activities for different purposes. But thanks anyway. :-)

Well all the martial arts I know personally are only for self defense. So I would say the purpose is the same. But ok, if you say specifically for women, that might be something else...

There is a EIKM school in Mies (by the Versoix roundabout and next to Sillhouette).
It caters for both male and female self defence. Unlike Martial arts, it centres around self protection, and also teaches protection in close quarters vrs knife and gun attack, as well as masterclasses which cover thinks like attacks in water, and whilst driving cars.
Based on the Israeli Special Forces, close quarter / Hand to hand combat training.
The instructor here in Mies is the ex chief instructor of the Israeli Army... so hes basically harder than the nails in a coffin.
The training involves "contact" (with pads if you wish)... since the belief is that training "without contact" will mean that the first time youre punched,/grabbed etc, you will be so shocked that the time for the "training to kick in" will be longer due to the shock factor and it will leave you at a disadvantage. If youre used to contact the training becomes very quickly a second sense, and your "longevity" is increased via your time to react... seconds do count. Additionally, Men train with Women, since Women need to train against the strength of a male attack... which makes sense.
I did some of these courses, and had to give up due to work... but can thoroughly recommend it....
Training times are very flexible... there are set opening hours, but you come and go as your hours and schedule suits... or you can do them all, if youre so inclined.
For anyone who is remotely worried about how to handle an agressor.... this is the training you need. It goes way way beyond the traditional "get out of grip, stamp on foot and clobber with hand bag" routine that you normally get with self defence.

For more info:
1st Video shows the "French Foreign Legion" doing a close combat demo using Krav Maga.
2nd Video is Philippe (the instructor from EIKM in Mies) himself showing how to disarm a gun/knife/strangle attack etc via a Documentary on the Discovery Channel.
