Servette or Cornavin: Where would you live?

Hi All,

I am moving to Geneva for work starting Jan 1st. I have to find a flat online - before I have a chance to explore the city. I am looking for a decent nightlife; Basically the ability to have a drink close to home after work, some activities on weekends, etc.

What are the pros and cons to both areas? Where would you rather live?

It really depends where the apartments are located in both areas, but ...

Cornavin is central, easy for public transport, but also noisy and crowded. It's close to Paquis (red light district, but also with nice pubs and restaurants).Forget about parking there unless your apartment comes with a garage.

Servette is for the most quieter, and you will be able to park you car (the further from the centre the better for this). Connections with the centre are easy (10-15 minutes by tram and/or bus).

For nightlive both areas are fine; get a bike and you'll be anywhere in the centre quickly. However I wouldn't restrict my search to these areas since it's already hard enough to find a decent place and there are many other nice areas in Geneva.

Avoid both places - live further out... I suggest Carouge

Geneva is a small city if you can call it that

But If you cannot walk 30 minutes then drunk public transport is fine and you will get to practically everywhere from the centre in that time

I recommend southern part of paquis: anywhere near the hotel President Wilson.

Personally, it'd have to be Plainpalais or Carouge. Both of which are competatively priced and are historic centres. Good transport links and pretty vibrant areas, day and night. Plainpalais and Carouge also host various markets throughout the week and weekends.

Servette and Cornavin are both very sketchy (comparatively speaking). Cornavin hosts Geneva's main railway station - and nothing much else. Servette is a bit shabby and there are many concrete, brutalist monstrosities passing for apartment buildings. Transport is ok, but not a fun walk if you miss the last tram/bus from the centre of town.

hehe, Plainpalais is so close to the hospital, if one gets used to hearing the noises day and night, it is fine. Wink

Carouge is nice though it is hardly considered as Geneva, pending on how you define geneva and how long you plan to stay in Geneva Smile
