Should poems rhyme? Should they follow a structure?

We were having an interesting discussion on Sunday with the Geneva Poets Corner (GPC ) group whether poems need to rhyme and have a structure. Classical poetry focussed more on that rather than Modern poetry Please post your comments about this. What would poetic prose qualify as then? I am curious to know what all of you feel about this. Best, Sreyashi

does a song have to have a melody? so poetry must have a structure, that's why it's not called prose. but everything is debateable.

good point! But all songs don't have melody, some qualify as 'noise', some just have words repeated and a lot of loud strumming of musical instruments in the background? What is that? Rap songs don't have a melody, as in tunes? Then there is poetic prose as well. But I agree everything is debateable....

Very fine line between music, noise, poetry, prose etc.  I attended a symphonic concert in Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels that you might classify as noise but it was fantastic how all the noise came together and touched me.  In the end I think structure or style is not so important in art - so long as it touches your heart and soul.

No one is going to tell me what to like or why I should like but it is sometimes interesting to have pointed out to you some technical features of a piece of art and what it contributes to the effect.  But in the end if it doesn't touch me then....but it may touch me years later or the effect may drift off as well.  Permanence/transience, it doesn't matter.  Enjoy it when you can.
