Smoking in Geneva

Is it just me, or do people smoke a lot in Geneva?

The other day I saw a very pregnant woman puffing away. I've heard it could be bad for the baby.

I did a search and found a couple of articles on this subject.

https://lenews.ch/2019/04/02/over-40-of-14-and-15-year-old-smokers-in-switzerland-buy-their-own-cigarettes/

This one was really strange, is it "fake news" I wonder?

Indeed Sean, this can help you to understand:

Big tabaco companies in Switzerland control the Swiss consumers' perception on smoking.

One of the first things I noticed when moving here from the US. There are many more smokers here than back home. Also young smokers. I have also seen a few pregnant women smoking.

Same. I have seen pregnant women smoke regularly, too. Looks like it is quite normal here.

I noticed, too, a very high percentage of smokers. On restaurant terraces it is common to see 90%-100% of people smoking.

Concerning smoking protection and education, it looks like Geneva is stuck in the 1950s. It is one of the paradoxes of Switzerland to be one of the most advanced countries but also very retrograde in some aspects.

When I came to Geneva 20 years ago I was surprised at the number of women smoking.  Not being of the medical profession I did not examine them to ascertain wether or not they were pregnant and then simply wondered if it was simply a case of people not being discreet in their smoking habits. In short I do not know.  If you go to Cornavin station and lookk down on hte rail tracks (unless te station has finally become a non smoking zone) you will see hundreds of cigarette butts; park benches and even benches along the footpaths are the same depending on the cleaning up policy of the commune in question.  But, if you read the article below (BBC) about pregnant women, it is worse in Blackpool

I am a little against smokers because I gave up at the age of sixteen.  Before that age you had to hide from the police in England; once I reached the legal age the excitement disappeared
