I am putting this out there because I feel that people are ready to hear it. Shoes are the bane of our feet. Now dont get me wrong I know that shoes are invaluable in this part of the world and we are not just going to walk around during winter without them. But when it comes to training I believe that there should be a concerted effort to at least mimic what would naturally occur if we were to leave our feet naked.
Ok so why do I think this?
- Walking around barefoot strengthens the small muscles in the foot which can lead to improving or eliminating foot, knee, and back pain
- Increase in medial arch height
- Impovements in foot or ankle mobility
- Improved foot strength
- Reduction in foot injuries (due to said foot strength)
- Increase in Proprioception, resulting in better balance
As I mention in the subject of this forum, our feet connect us to the world we stand on and so act as a conduit for the rest of our body. When we numb this conduit, or fail to use them, we are in effect dumbing down our nervous system. Minimalist type shoes can improve on some of the areas discussed above, but walking around the house, or working out barefoot whenever possible will really help. I consider mobility a staple to having a long and healthy life, which is why I incorporate it with each one of my sessions.
Have a great Day!
