State schooling available in Geneva for a 17 year old?

Hi, we are new in Geneva and try as I might, I am having difficulty working out whether our 17 year old daughter is entitled to schooling (not international school) in Geneva.  And if the answer is yes, how do we go about getting her enrolled?  She has completed 4 years of high school in NZ and is technically in her final year. She will eventually return to NZ to attend university.  Her French language is very beginner as we did not have a lot of lead in time before moving here.  Any advice would be very much appreciated?

Regards

Jane

Jane, I think you should see at your commun 'Marie' , usually you can get some answers of your options. One problem is none of the state schools teach in English. Also in Geneva the schools are all in French, with I think one state school exception in Vernier, where the school is in German.

There is a book written by the American International Women's Club of Geneva,

on there website they have many very useful website and resources to help people new in Geneva. Including details in english about

City of Geneva
Swiss Administration
Canton of Geneva
Geneva Tourist Office
Swiss News

Good luck and welcome to Geneva.

Jane - check out Institute international de Lancy - http://www.iil.ch/ I know you said no international school but as others say will be difficult in Swiss mainstream school.without proficient French. Our 15 yr old son goes to IIL and loves it and is doing well there.

Cheers

Hi there,

In the public system, your daughter would be eligible for "Collège". You would need to contact the DIP (département de l'instruction publique) to see about enrollment, but as has been said earlier, she would need French. There is a service here that helps new arrivals with learning French ,I found info below in the DIP website.

High School (16 -19 years old) : please make an appointment with Service des Classes d'accueil (SCAI) - 40, Av. de Châtelaine - Tél 022 338 35 60

Good luck!
