Strange Scenario in Classifieds

Was interested in an item being sold on the Classifieds and when I went to look at it the guy was not who the name on the post or door suggested. Not sure why anyone would make up a fake identity or lie about it to sell items but it raised alarms and had to excuse myself out.

Anyone else encounter this?

Kind of creepy...

Beware of people who offer great appts for under market prices - they make up false names and addresses in the best areas of town.  I once checked one out and the flat owners name did not appear anywhere in the building he was saying he lived in. Apparetnly he wanted to rent out his flat for a year while he was doing a PHD abroad!!

They ask for deposit to be sent and then promise to send the keys for the great flat - which of course doesn't exist. The guy said he was in London - so when I told him  I was also in London ( which was true) and that we could meet, the flat owner disappeared very fast. WinkHe had even sent me a copy of his passport (nice photo of a white guy) but when we spoke his voice was definitely not white!! Frown It is very common in Geneva and many people have been caught out with such schemes as housing is so scarce here, so once needs to be careful! :) Sealed

Her comment only states that there is a clash between the pic of a Caucasian and the accent of someone who is probably not Caucasian. In this particular context (lots of schemes in the housing business, and - in this case, the situation being already shady), it's only natural to see it as a red flag. If you don't, you are just being naive.

She doesn't imply that Caucasian are superior to non Caucasian, but it seems that it's what you infer from the situation. Therefore I find the implications of your comment offensive.

I am SO sorry for offending you!

Don't be, cause you didn't; i was just making fun of your dramatic allegiance to blind political correctness...

Hello?! The biggest scammers in history were as caucasian as they come.

See... that's exactly why you don't get it. NOBODY denied that.

If she had written: (not mentioning a pic) "He did this and said that and the deal was too good to be true and in addition when I had him on the phone he had a suspect accent..."

THAT would be obviously racist. It's not what she wrote...

Anyway...I wonder what a caucasian sounds like. I live in a multicultural and multiracial society and therefore I find that your argument is an outdated fallacy.

Well, lots of different leaf-bearing trees in the world and yet I can say without a doubt that a cedar is not a leaf-bearing tree... Does the analogy help?

I think that generalisations based on exceptions and estereotyping are just bigotry.

Good thing then that we were talking about a particular case in a particular context... as already mentioned...

I have been conned by caucasian looking and sounding people, even worse.

And being conned by one of your own personal Caucasian species is even worse.

Well that escalated quickly…

My situation was one where the seller’s name is that of someone who claims he’s British, yet when I showed up he was South Asian (as the name of the door suggested) and claimed to be a diplomat of one of said nations. So not British and not named (initials) M.O.

It’s just odd because I don’t understand why one would make up a fake name, of that sort. Specially if he was truly a diplomat. Maybe he thinks his items will sell easier, I don’t know.

OR perhaps/maybe a friend (who is in fact caucasian) is trying to help him sell his stuff? Did that ever occur to you?

I'm pretty sure I know who the OP is talking about (Given the listings). I didn't have to deal with the other person (whether fake or not). Bought something from the real guy and he was... Yeah.

Wouldnt surprise me if he did this though.
