Studying in Geneva while living in France

Hello Glocals,

I am a US Citizen who will be studying at the University of Geneva come this fall. I recieved my acceptance a bit too late to apply to student dormitories for this semester;I have been looking for private housing and have noticed that a lot of advertised housing is located across the border in France.

I would like to pose this question: If I have a swiss visa type D (student) for the canton of Geneva can I live in, say, Gaillard (France)? Or do I need to apply for a separate French permit?

I imagine that this is a common situation for foreign students and hope that the glocals community may have some answers as well as advice.

Thank You,

Alexander

As far as I know you will need a french permit.

I see Unige has not improved its communication concerning the accomodation for foreign students...

How much are you willing to spend for an accomodation, and how long are you staying ?

If you have questions concerning the student life and Uni, don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you for your reply. I have come to understand that I can live up to 90 days in Frabce with my US passport, through the duration of which I can apply for and recieve a lng term visa.

My maximum rent-payment is at $800 and I am staying for 3 semesters; currently I am looking for the most cost-effective options.

Why don't you apply for student foyers? They are all over Geneva and you can eaisly get in as they are meant for students only. They are even priced at less than $800/month. If you need the name of the foyers let me know and I will give you their URLs.

So what have you done for now ?

Only the request to the Uni for a student housing: http://www.unige.ch/batiment/division/service-batiments/formulaires/Right?

Your only problem with France might be to find an accomodation while not having a residence permit (the 90 days are the equivalent of a touristic visa).

I contacted every foyer/housing available for students, only one has replied and they are only available for one month. I am going to most likely use this option and keep looking for more housing once I am on the ground.

Check Airbnb as well and try to choose a cheap price as well. You will get some offeres but again always bargain and try to get a small room where everything is included at a quite resonable prices. Agai, foyers fill up quickly as students will start the fall semester really soon.

Check the folloing link .. but your best bet would be to call the person up and to pay a deposit to secure the place as they work like: 1st come - 1st serve ...

Thank you for your advice.

Unfortunately airbnb only has rooms in my price range in France - the room that you linked me is only available until August 19th.

You are welcome. Try also this one .. they even accept Credit Careds. Just call them up right away don't send them an e-mail because they are too slow responding! If you call they will answer right away .. but check what option do you want 1st!
