Stuffed Horse in Plainpalais shelter

I went by the tram's shelter of Plainpalais today, after I read about it in the newspaper. Do you think it 's Art ?

I'm a bit disturbed....

I (try not to) see it every day when I pass by tram. I read the article, it is supposed to represent the cultural crisis,,, honestly I don't get it.

Very disturbing indeed.

It's art, if the artist produced it in order to express something.

Its very sad. I can imagine it would be quite disturbing in the flesh.

If the TdG article wasn't dated on the 2nd but on the 1st of April, you could believe it's a "poisson d'avril".

Very bad taste, lack of dignity, and as Sonja said, should NOT be in a PUBLIC space.

Hate it. Not art.

For people watching it, what is the question ? That it's disturbing to see it, or that an animal's dignity is not respected ?

But who does really respect animals ?? Some vegan people may be, provided that they not only do not eat meat, dairy products, eggs, etc, but also never buy leather, feathers, palm oil, medications, cosmetic products, etc. etc. ....

If people are "disturbed", they should reconsider it compared to that-they-cannot-see, e.g. every week hundreds if not thousands of horses (and other meat animals too) carried in very bad conditions, HANG in slaughtered houses, dogs skinned alive in China for these so trendy fur winter fashion, pets tortured for fun (yes), chihuahuas and other yorkshire trendy breeds reproduced in awful conditions (puppy mills) and imported in Western Europe by unaware people, etc. etc. etc.

Most ot the time, being an animal on this Earth is not a happy fate, dead or alive ..

For me is not art, its a horror to anyone who has a scrap of love for animals. Some can remove themselves from it as a horse may not be a constant or accessible in their lives.

If this was a dozen labrodors swinging from the ceiling, I am certain the store would have been burnt down by now.

If you wish to demonstrate this so called art take it to a closed musuem where it allows me the choice to see it, not slapping my morals daily.

This so called "art" is discusting and immoral. Its not art, and makes my stomach turn, in the same was as preserved sawn in half animals by Damien Hirst does.

Want to show/know what the economic and cultural crisis looks like today?

Open your wallets and you will see.

last news from the newspaper

it fell last night, one of the strap broke.

About the horse itself, it's a theater's horse and played in Richard III at the Comédie (a theater in Geneva) in 2005.... where it was hanged and pulled up and down....

I did not know we have so many experts in Art on glocals! wow. You wanted to see fluffy little bunnies going around in pink? I actually quite like the idea. It is  unconventional , it is very simple but it also tells you alot. It grabs people's attention as it does not need much attention to details. you will use your brain for maybe 30 secs , and try to interpret it and be disgusted or maybe think about some grotesque, cruel and awful incidents that happen to many everyday, it takes you out of your comfort zone for 30 seconds (or maybe more if you are a little sensitive sparrow). I think it is good to get out of your bubble sometimes. see the world. see the hanging horse in the window! and I must say I am surprised. In this boring, cold town with a grey sky and  tedious repetitive days, seeing something like this is rare. !!!

I guess in your life you saw things worse than that......well we all can't do anything...

I have a magnificent idea.....what about, you and the "genious artist" taking the place of this poor horse?

I wouldn't mind to see "humans" in that position.

....and by the way, I refuse to see cruelty against animals, to try to wake up a boring little town..... Geneva remain still what it is!

@Bluette: You "wouldn't mind to see "humans" in that position, but you are against animal cruelty" - I think your comment is quite bizarre!!

Perhaps one interpretation for the hanging horse is - Gone are the days when horses were instrumental for our development, as we are now living in a high-tech era...

How strange to have a discussion about the "dignity of animals" and the "meaning of death" in this context. Assuming that the majority of us are meat-eaters and fashion-lovers: Are a steak medium-rare or a gucci leather belt really any more dignified? We hardly question our daily habits, yet seem terribly upset when a piece of art (whatever that means) tries to challenge our perception.

Personally, i don't expect an exhibition in Plainpalais to ever have the quality of Tate Modern, and i am happy to leave the evaluation of good/bad art to the experts. i might be biassed anyway -  i love horses and was quite disturbed by the installation of a stuffed pony. However, i am delighted about almost anything that manages to spark discussion and kicks us out of our comfort zone. great - more, please!

Maybe the artist could just replace this and install a 60' plasma screen with a looped film of a pensioner masturbating - to symbolize what a load of old wank his ideas are.

So glad you told me it was stuffed.....

I was waiting for the next 20 minutes article on how its insides bloated and then inadvertently exploded whilst a group of 4 year old kids were being led past on their way to the circus.....

I eat meat, I have even killed and eaten what I killed many times... but as with most of the natural world I dont believe in the imbalance of killing for the sake of it.... if you kill it eat it... otherwise dont kill it.

Art is no reason to kill something.

Hey,an even BETTER idea - and more suitable for the Geneva context ,would have been a stuffed, hanging banker......now that WOULD provoke some interesting discussion,n'est-ce pas?

But I guess that might be too close to the bone for this money-obsessed country?

I am also disturbed by the sight of a healthy-looking but dead horse hanging up, but my ultimate view of it would depend on how and why the horse had died.

I've never heard of a modern artist commissioning the execution of an animal to be used in a piece of art; as far as I know they normally pull them off of an existing production line.  I therefore suspect that this poor chap would have ended up in the chilled section of coop or on the menus of Geneva restaurants if he hadn't been acquired by the artist.  If this is the case then the artist has successfully confronted us with our collective detachment regarding what we eat and how it gets to our plates.  I wonder how many people have seen this horse, become a little disturbed or disgusted, and then consoled themselves with some veal or foie gras.

Also: if my post-death choice was to be chopped up and eaten or preserved in all my loveliness and put on display in a city centre, I would choose the latter.

It should be shown in a museum to 18+ visitors, not put in a middle of a pubic place like a piece of art. A giant chair with a leg blown up is one thing, but a young dead horse is totally innapropriate.

It’s funny how people want to always sprinkle some sugar coating over everything...

Double standards meeting objective morals and etiquette...

I neither like or dislike it but it sure has got people going and questioning things, and that is not a bad thing in these sterile boring times ...

I love animals and I am not a big fan of the over industrialised meat industry but I want bleat on about the wrongs or rights of it, you should be happy that Switzerland is cool enough to allow such a display, it’s not about is it art or not and all that shenanigans, that is an endlessly flawed debate from the start ...

The point is the artist and has gone and done it and does not give 2 **** if we like it or not.  It’s disturbing, well I find most aspects of life disturbing but we soldier on bravely doing our stuff because we are after all only human…

I love horses, and i find this idea very disturbing and pretty poor if it is supposed to be art...i would not buy any piece of art from these guys, however we are in a free country...some restaurants also have dead animals beeing shown as trophees...so if we don t like it, then we shall only avoid them i guess, and leave them unfamous and unknown as they should remain !

There is also a famous artist, showing stuffed humans.....brrrrrrrrrrrr  Yell really disgusting, well, probably another disgusting subject!

There is also a famous artist, showing stuffed humans.....brrrrrrrrrrrr  Yell really disgusting, well, probably another disgusting subject!

I've never seen it open, but I'm pretty sure I've seen a horsemeat butcher in town.

We get very upset by the sight of this dead animal presented as art, but don't even blink when walking past dismembered carcasses in a supermarket, or butcher's window.

It made me think a lot about context and expectations, and the meat industry. But less about the cultural crisis.

To those who refuse to accept it as art - what is art? Does it have to be beautiful? Appealing? To make you feel good and want to look at it more?

Well from an artistic perspective, Art is supposed to make you think and question things... from my own perspective , I like a bit of orse :)

Come on, the argument of « it’s valid art because it’s disturbing » has been used too many times by people who are not talented enough to touch us aesthetically and have to fall back on teenager like provocation. The first guys who did it back in the 20’s had maybe a point, but it is now just another cliché like sunsets on the sea. Some say this is questioning us, but questioning what? The fact that we don’t like to see corpses? What a great finding ! A six years old can tell you as much. So no, sorry, I’ve got no understanding for these childish attempts to grab public attention.

On the flip side the Natural History Museum in London and here is FULL of stuffed animals...

I have seen kids really disturbed by the fact that animals are dead in front of them.. but...art , science, shit, where is the fine line between them all?

Also: if my post-death choice was to be chopped up and eaten or preserved in all my loveliness and put on display in a city centre, I would choose the latter.

Whether or not the art is 'good' or 'valid', for me it's still art. The art is in the intention to express, in the production rather than the reception.

An 'artist' friend of mine rejected this idea, claiming that art is something that is produced by artists. But then, who is an artist? Someone with a BA degree? Someone who exhibits their work? Who is to be the judge of their 'talent'?

Surely if The Pope had been using a steroid he'd have much bigger muscles.

Indeed is this installation too controversial and repelling.

And yet, I asked myself how many of the people that have a pity for a beautiful horse would enjoy a steak from an animal? And thus indirectly hang it and butcher it...
