Super Techie Inquiry -- Ethernet Splitter!

Hello,

I have a bit of a project. My landlady doesn't have a wireless setup so I had my Mac Airport shipped and it's working fine.

However, the problem is she has a Toshiba Satellite and neither of has any clue how to get it to go wireless. I'm ok with PC's but not when everything is in French.

I figured an alternative solution would be to get an ethernet splitter but I have no idea where to get it in Switzerland. Of course, the obviouse place to look for something like that would be Amazon but I'm just looking for ways to localize and not go through international shipping ordeal.

Any tech heads out there with suggestions??

Thanks!

What model Toshiba?  Everything has WiFi today but if it's an older machine, it might not have wireless capability installed.  If so, the easiest solution would be a wireless adapter in the form of a plug-in card or a USB key.

If the landlady's Satellite is less than seven years old it should have wifi builtin. Get someone who speaks French to configure it.  If you can't do that, buy a router, not a splitter; GIYF.

Hi Carol

If you don't want to change anything in your landlady's setup, the easiest will be to us an ethernet switch (compared to a hub/splitter it will avoid useless data traffic to your airport) like this one, which is 7frs more than the cheapest hub :
http://www.prodimex.ch/pInfos.aspx?CODE=B25B11

Then simply connect both airport and PC to the swich using the RJ45 cables you already have.

If you prefere to set the PC to use the WiFi, first check if it actually has this feature. In french go to the start menu "Démarer -> Panneau de configuration" then open the "Connexions réseau" and see if there is something called "Connexion au réseau sans fil". If it exist follow the steps in this page to set it up:

I hope it will help.

Cheers, Pika
