Swiss mobile/cell phone use in Annemasse, France

Hi all,

I did see some other threads on similar issues, but I never saw an accurate response.

I will be living in Annemasse this summer and working in Geneva. My wife will be staying at home in Annemasse each day. We will both have cell phones and want to be able to stay in touch with each other.

Thus the question. Is there a Swiss network (i.e. Orange, Sunrise, etc...) that has towers close enough to Annemasse that you can stay on the Swiss mobile network even while in France (just Annemasse)?

I will probably use prepaid sims since we'll be there less than 3 months, but the important thing is a Swiss network that works in France first and then from there we'll figure out the plan that works.

Thanks in advance for any help.

you just need to block your phone on the swiss network. It's done in the parameters.

French channels is more powerful than swiss ones, so they take over quickly.

I'm in Neydens, with a M-budget mobile (it's on Swisscom network) and I've got the Swiss network without problem (even if it's a bit weak, but I don't phone that much when I'm home...)

I think there's a post somewhere on the forum with a map of the different mobile networks around Geneva.

Thanks you both for your help!

That's sort of what I figured, but I was just trying to nail down exactly what the situation would be like near the border.

Bertrand, any idea where that map is? I think that would be really helpful.

This should be pretty simple.. It's done from the handset.

So assuming there is a swiss signal that your phone can find, you lock it there from the handset..

On my iphone here it's done via Settings > Carrier and the choice is to automatically choose the strongest carrier.. or lock it to a specific carrier. So I can uncheck automatic and choose my carrier from the list.

That means of course that if my carrier has no signal, the phone stops working, it will not switch to another.

Last time I shopped in Annemasse, I had a very weak but usable signal on Swisscom.  When standing outside.  You might be OK if you're on a hill and have an unobstructed line of sight to the border.

well, doesn't help a lot, as if just show the coverage inside Switzerland....

a more interesting here http://map.geo.admin.ch/  where you can find, if you have the correct layer, where are the towers.

Hello,

I live in Ambilly, between Annemasse and Geneva. Here the cell works as if in Geneva, but if you go further inside Annemasse you loose the signal. So it depends on where exactly you will be in Annemasse, and also depends on the building of course. If you could send me the address or somewhere close, as a private message, I can try and tell you when I'm passing by.
