Hi folks,
I'm a US resident about to move to Geneva, and I was told that I need to provide the following document to receive a Swiss work permit:

"Original document of the police record (which has to be requested in the country of residence; validity of 6 months) of you and your spouse."
Can someone please let me know how to obtain this? Is this saying I need a police record from my current city (Chicago) or from my future city (Geneva)?
My spouse and I have never been in trouble with the police, and so I'm not really sure what I need to do here. The Swiss company applying for the permit on our behalf doesn't have any advice or info either.
Are there any US citizens on here that have had to do this before???
Thanks very much,
Adam

To answer your first question, you need to get this from US law enforcement.
Not sure if this can be done at the local level (Illinois State Police or Chicago Police) or at the Federal level (FBI). In Canada, this type of thing is handled at the Federal level (RCMP) since they have access to all of the databases.
I would suggest that you give the FBI office in Chicago a quick call and explain what you need. They should have a service that will do this for a small fee.

Good luck.

I arrived into Switzerland (Geneva) from my last post in London, and though it's a bit fuzzy....I think I called a central number for London police, explaining to them what I needed, and then I picked up the necessary form at the nearest police station. On the form was the address to mail in the request, and then afterwards they forward the results to your employer (you fill in the details). I'm sure there was a nominal fee involved.
Good luck.

I did this at the American Consulate here in Geneva in 2000. That was back when the consulate could do things, now they have some people there who's job it is to say "you have to go to Berne for that" no matter what your problem is. But at the time the lady at the consulate said, "ok did you ever commit any crimes?" I said, nope. She says give me $20. Then she signs a letter saying this guy committed no crimes. That was good enough for the permit people.

I cam to study in a school in Lausanne. And as far as I remember I gave a personal declaration stamped by a lawyer...
