The Danger of Nightclubs in Geneva - warn your kids!

Here is a true story as recounted by a friend.

Visit to a Geneva Disco

His 17 year old son announced to his father that he had been to a Nightclub with 3 male friends in Geneva.  (I will leave out the name of the club, as I don't want to get sued.)

Despite the son's excitement, the father was not pleased to hear such news.  "Isn't it illegal to go to a bar when you are under 18?", asked the father.  "Awww Dad, everyone has a false ID", replied the son.

Over-friendly Boss

The son then recounted that the night club owner had come over and made friends with them.  He said the nightclub owner talked with them a long time about the music they like, and gave them all free champagne. He told his Dad that the "owner" had many girlfriends, drove a Porsche, and is a multi-millionaire.  "I want to own a nightclub when I leave school", say the boy.

Just then a message arrives on the son's phone from the club "owner".  It thanks the boys for coming and says how great they are and asks them to come back again bringing all their friends.  The son is hyper-excited that the Night Club "owner" is now his good friend.

"How old is this guy?", asks the father.  "He's about 35", replies the son.  "He's a paedophile!" asserts Dad.  "Awww Dad, I know what a paedophile is, and he's not," replies the son.  "He goes home with two or three girls every night and he has $95 million in the bank.".

Son tells Dad "He's so rich that we didn't have to pay anything.  He liked our views about the music and atmosphere so much.  We drank loads of champagne".

Dad was hyper sceptical.   "It must be lies.  Why would a 35 year old man be interested in four schoolboys?", asks the Dad.  Boy argues back that it is because is so cool and can give good advice about the music and so on.

Dad considered reporting the club and the "owner" to the police, but in the end took no action.  Dad warns son that "all is not what it seems.  -  I forbid you to go there again"

The thefts start

A few weeks later, valuable items like jewellery and bicycles start to vanish from the father's home.  Strangely enough, there is a spate of similar thefts in all his schoolfriend's homes, all over different parts of town in just the same way- bicycles and jewellery go missing.

Hacking Facebook

Some rapid detective work by some of the affected parents then follows.  Simply put, this involves hacking into their children's Facebook accounts and reading other blogs and email.

The story then begins to emerge.  Thank you, Facebook, Myspace, Gmail and Twitter for helping the parents know what their kids are really up to.

What really happened

A week or two after the first nightclub visit, the boys, accompanied by another 8 male friends had headed again for this "hot" nightclub.  On arrival, the owner theated them like long lost friends.  "Welcome back boys, come in, sit down and enjoy", he said.   "Let me get you some champagne.  It's on the house - free of charge".

As the evening wears on, more bottles of champagne arrive.  Some girls turn up and mingle, and even more champagne is drunk.  The boys are quite drunk and all natural caution, (if there ever was any in boys), is forgotten.

The Shocking Bill

At the end of the evening, the kids are preparing to leave, and then the shock comes.  A burly waiter brings a bill!  A bill!???  The kids weren't expecting that!  The "owner" is their friend.  The bill is for over 8'000 Swiss Francs! (I reckon that's around 15 to 20 bottles - what 17 year could drink a whole bottle?).

The boss is called, and explains to the boys that he loves their company which is why he bought them the "FIRST" bottle of champagne, but surely they didn't think all the champagne was free?  What could they have been thinking?

None of the kids have that sort of money, or even a fraction of it.  Only one of the boys is over 18, and he luckily has a credit card, supplied and guaranteed by his parents "for emergencies".   The burly waiter makes it clear that they are not leaving before the bill is paid.

Finally a deal amongst the boys is agreed.  The one with the credit card paid the bill and the other boys will repay him the next day.

The children turn to theft

Nobody dares to tell their parents why they suddenly need cash.  Many of the kids simply can't raise hundreds of francs at short notice, and the pressure is on them to pay-up quickly.  One of the boys finds a "fence" - someone who will pay cash for stolen bicycles and jewellery.  The children are forced to steal from their parents, to flog their bicycles and their parents jewellery to raise the cash.  Another boy tries to sell his dad's Rolex to the Rolex shop in Geneva, and gets himself promptly arrested after the shop calls the police, (boys are so naive sometimes).

The Lesson

Whilst the kids learned a valuable lesson, "there is no free lunch", it ultimately cost the parents a lot more in stolen property.

Warn your kids

If you think your kids may be about to go to a night club, warn them about the scammy tactics employed by the so called owner of this well known Geneva night club.  He befriends the boys, makes them feel grown up, impresses them with stories of his three girlfriends "every night", claims he has money and power, and then he scams them by tricking them into thinking the champagne is free.  What a sleazebag.

Reka, Yes I agree.  Kids these days don't behave like we did.  I dare say they now make their own IDs with a PC.  Although obviously fake, the nightclubs probably don't care.  I think one of them got raided last year for letting in minors.

As for the kid trying to sell his Dad's Rolex, I bet he had some explaining to do.

Yes it's sad that kids these days dont want to trust their dirty little secrets to their parents.  I wonder why?  I am sure we were never like that.

@reka1123 "false use of police?!" family or not, the watch was stolen from the father just a sure as if he'd secretly opened up his dad's wallet and taken 100 CHF. Money is not easily identified as stolen; a Rolex is. The store clerk made the right call and there was no false use of police.

Am intrigued as to which "club" this was... sounds rather like the lads were hanging out in a strip club to ring up such a bill, especially since "girls" were brought to the table....

.....which as far as I know doesnt  happen in Java / B Club / Sip or the such like (these are the ones I know, where maybe, just maybe, one might be able to ring up a bar bill of this magnitude, although one would need to be drinking "Magnums" of vodka and bubbly to hit that mark.)

They learned the hard way...

I'll leave aside the fact that 1) the parents should have been more cautious about their son's behavior, 2) that they apparently allowed him to repeatedly go to a night club knowing that he had a forged ID and 3) did not discuss the matter with him. I will also leave aside the fact that the boy did not dare to tell them that he made a mistake. Not exactly my idea of a responsible education...

If the boy is 17, then he has no right whatsoever to be there and the sales of the bottles may therefore be declared illegal. Did the father consult with a lawyer? Maybe he could file a complaint for something like breach of trust and abuse of dominant position.

To me this whole story seems to be an urban legend rather. Just some inconsistency I doscobered upon quick reading:

It is said that the whole story became clear only after the parents hacked their childrens' facebook accounts (I doubt most parents would succeed in doing this btw). However, in the end, it is mentioned that one of the boys gets arrested when sellign his father's Rolex watch. So did the father not notice that his son got arrested? I doubt so...

20 bottles... between 8 teenagers...come on... even I would be proud of that number.

Its more likely they had larger bottles, and shared alot, or were in a cabaret where the girls made sure the bubbly was wasted...

... and even though the Vice Squad officer who'd raid the 'Night club' told the boy to keep walking towards him, the boy couldn't help but turn round one last time.

When he did, he saw that the nightclub owner had a Magnum of champagne in his hand with his mate's head on the end of it, banging it on the roof of his Porsche!!!!! Laughing

Some people have pointed out some inconsistencies in this story, like the relationship between the size of the bill (8000), the number of bottles drunk (maybe 20?), the number of boys (12), the presence of girls (unlikely) and the ability, (or lack of it), to read a facebook account on your son's computer.

Perhaps some of the "facts" got distorted, embellished or badly remembered by the father who told me this story, I don't know.  I'just telling what I heard.  One point I forgot to mention out is that although I only heard the story a few months ago, the events seem to have taken place a number of years ago, so yes, in the telling and re-telling, there was possibly some slippage.

However, the real point of the story is that a bunch of kids found themselves in a place they should never have gone to, because they were under-age, and then got stung with a massive bill that they didn't expect.

As for the nightclubs letting in children, here are a couple of stories on the subject from Le Tribune de Geneve:

http://www.tdg.ch/geneve/actu/2008/08/27/boites-nuit-genevoises-serrent-vis-face-mineurs

Well, now the story gets even another strange point: If it took place some years ago already, then it is very unlikely, that all the kids had facebook/twitter accounts etc. These are all rather recent phenomena.
Furthermore I doubt that everybody can make passports at home... if things were so easy, organized crime would be happy :D

Twitter - I guess Twitter didn't really exist for the masses a few years ago.

Facebook has been around for some time.  I am not sure what Facebook security is like these days, but a few years ago, they allowed your PC to remember your login details.  Some websites still do that.

- From Wikipedia:

A January 2009 Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used social networking service by worldwide monthly active users, followed by MySpace.

As for email, it probably still existed for kids a few years ago, but I get the impression the youngsters these days think email is for granddads.

I know facebook exists for quite some time already, but it has become really popular here in Europe only during the last 1-2 years or so.

Charlie,

I was astonished and appalled at your immediate use of the name 'Olga'.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olga_(name)

As you can see this has Slavic origins and so one can only assume that use imagine all 'ladies of the night' to be from Eastern Europe! Shame on you! Why didn't you use another name such as Françoise? Eh, Eh?

I hope you'll apologies to Glocals members from that region and refrain from making such sweeping generalisation again in future.

Well people... I grew up here in Geneva, and when I was 15 I would go out to bars with all my 14-16 year old friends (that's pretty much all there was in certain bars) we would drink beer, and really sweet mixed "kamakaze" drinks. I don't think teenagers really even like champagne that much.

Of course back then no one checked your ID ever, and especially if you were a cute girl, you could get in to pretty much any bar or club.

None of my friends or myself ever got scamed into drinking 20 bottles of champagne (personnally I think if 8 kids drank 20 bottles, they would probably be vommiting everywhere...) at the time 2 beers was enough for most of us!

Teenagers being scamed at clubs personally is really not what parents should worry most. But rather, them getting too drunk, passing out in a dark corner, maybe getting robbed, or abused, or going home with some strangers ( a girl got abducted, raped and was found burned and burried in the woods a few years ago - my brother knew her)

I think the best thing you can do for your kids is teach them how to drink responsibly, so they know their limits, before they go out for their first really big nights out with their friends.

And also, enforce a strict no-drinking and driving policy. Even with a scooter. You drink, take the bus home. They have lots of Noctambus. (this is a rule I always follow myself) - loosing a friend to drunk driving does that to you.

Hope this wasn't too depressing :-)

Happy day!

I'm with Fabian: this story must be an urban legend.

I don't doubt kids fake IDs to get into clubs (all over the world), and that some kids gets scammed. But the story as it was told doesn't make sense.

if you believe that story then maybe you also want to buy the Mont Blanc bridge from me. I own it, really!
