The whole Swiss Permit B but wanting to live in France thing....

Okay, so we learned pretty quickly after our arrival that our dreams of living in a lovely French home with our Permit B was not going to happen. *However* we've been here for about 4 years already and next year it will be five years. My questions are:

1. Are we eligible and if so when can we apply for our C-permits?

2. With a C-permit can we then buy property and live in France?

Our lease is coming up early next year and we want to figure out if we can buy a place in France (since the home choices in Switzerland seem to be either poky and small or extra super-duper expensive)?

Any information in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

firstly, you have to be sure that you will be eligible for a C permit after 5 yrs. not all countries have the same conditions.

second, if you buy a house/apt. in france and the french authorities allow this, you mostl likely will have to declare it as a secondary residence.

thirdly, you must keep a primary residence in switzerland. having a c permit does not give you the right to work in switzerland and live in france.

only swiss nationals and european nationals have the right to live and work in different countries in europe.

however, you should nevertheless check this out, as laws may have been recently modified.

Thanks so much for the response epicure. I do think U.S. citizens are eligible for the Permit C. As for the rest....well it's what I feared :-(. Can you let me know where I can check for these laws, etc? Not sure where to start.

yes, us citizens (i am one :-)  ) are eligible for a c permit (has it changed to 5 yrs? ) great. for the rest just ask at the bureau des étrangers in your commune and where these restrictions are written. of course if you really want to live in france, you are only required to declare your primary residence in switzerland, basically for tax reasons. so find a room or cheap studio to declare your primary swiss residence. you will also be required to have swiss health insurance. so, is it really worth it?
