Thief in the apartment, not safe in Geneva. What to do?

Hello there

I was told today by a neighbour that she heard her door knob was turned by someone yesterday at  around 1.00am - 2.00am, then which of course was not a 'success'.

I now am afraid of any accident like this, how to be 'ready' if I heard something abnormal during the night, if that thief came again and come cross us in the room, what can I do, even to call the policeman I guess would be too late?

thank you for your advices.

For those of you who have a regular and horizontal door handle inside your flat better position for the night a small container filled with coins and nails above the said handle . When someone during the night will move the outside knob or handle,  the inside level will make the container fall down on parquet or tilies and smash with noise spreading the load everywhere.

Consequences: you wake-up due to excessive noise, chances are the night uninvited visitor will flee scared by sudden noise and then you may still call Police to prevent repeat trials.

1. Get an extra lock.

2. If you hear a thief trying to get into your place (or in it already) then make as much noise as possible: scream, bang chairs on the walls, etc. The bad guys don't want a scene, so when they hear all the noise they go away to an easier target.

Well, of course there are burglaries in Geneva (see: countless threads on this site) but I wouldn't get too scared about a turning door-knob. More than likely it was a drunken neighbour who got the wrong door.

Real thieves would have at least tried to pick the lock, surely...

Import a baseball bat and keep it somewhere next to the bed.  If someone breaks into your place in the middle of the night, then grab the bat and pretend the intruder is a walking piñata!!  I say swing away first, and ask questions later Wink

If you feel you must protect yourself, don't shoot the thief when he is in the loo.  It may turn out to be your girlfriend who you hadn't noticed had secretly left the bed.

I totally agree with Adam: It was most likely some drunk.

80% percent of burglaries happen during the day, when nobody is at home

It was definitely not a thief.  Have a security bar installed, lock it at night, and relax. Smile

My insurance agent told me one bar was not enough, that two – in the form of a cross – were needed, at a cost of approx. CHF 2000, so not easily available to everyone.

I have installed only one bar, which already paid back. Some neighbours (no bar installed) in my appartmentbuilding had a visit of some thiefs, who didn't even try to open my door. A bar takes much more time to open, so they prefer to take doors without any.

My neighbor had his villa broken into, the door just had one lock, I was advised to get a LOCK that is a Vertical Bar, because the bar is usually stuck into the floor and top of the door, which makes it impossible to break into your residence, unless they break a window.

I had one installed in the cave and front door = CHF 1800. The company also ensured I get 2 free extra keys that are 'Multi-Lock' keys which are patented and normally cost CHF70. The Horizontal bar is 50% less effective compared to the Vertical. So CHF 700 vs CHF 900. I am also certain that you can negotiate the price to CHF 800- (includes installation)

The service was great and very helpful, ask for the owner Mr. Grossi but he speaks very little engish but he tries.

If you want to do it yourself, at Jumbo CHF 325-, see the attached photos
