As promised dear members, today is Monday and this means TIPS DAY! Today's tips will be about the best deal for a car, without a huge impact on your bank account!
First advise I can give you is to get familiar with the paperwork required, your rights, etc with the Office des Autos. Second step is probably to decide the type of car that would better suit your needs for a reasonable price. Here is where you have to be alert....the best deals are probably not in the garages in Geneva and often you just don't know for sure how much the cars are worth. Not anymore!
Once you know pretty much the type of car you would like to buy (avoid new ones, once you first turn the key, it's 30% of the price gone!), you can look for a benschmark on www.autoscout.ch. Now you know how much you should pay.
The best deals (based on my research) can be found on the newspaper GHI (it's better if you already know a bit about mechanics) and at a garage in Aadorf, near Winterthur. It's a bit far from Geneva, but if you are a fan of German cars (BMW, Audi, etc), that is the sanctuary for you (www.auto-eberhard.ch)! The cars there are corporate ones, not a lot of KM, almost new.
Another place to find good deals is here!! On GOL's Market/Goods and Services (it can happen!)
Hope this helps!
Next Monday: tips on how to prepare a few simple but tasty meals for one...no more excuses for being lazy!

thanks iolly. another tip, for those real new to Geneva: 2nd hand cars here lose value REAL quick. So if you're willing to buy a car that's 1 year old, you'll already save 15-25% on the new car price.

Hey,
Another site to get valuations on cars is http://www.eurotaxglass.ch/ch/fr/
Costs 9 francs a shot though, but it gives you what to expect if you sell your car and what you should expect to pay if buying from a dealer...
Ciao,
Rick
