Trail running from GE without car

Hi there!

Just arrived to GE and I'm wondering if this is possible to go running in the mountains from the city center or taking a train/bus eventually.

For instance I used to go running 25 kms on one sunday session. I don't know if I could reach the mountains from the city.

Do you have some advices to give me? What would be the easiest considering I have no car?

Thanks,

Damien

I'm assuming you're looking for some vertical challenge?

I'd say http://www.wanderland.ch/en/hiking-in-switzerland.html is a good place to start- it will lead you to walking/hiking trails and those will have dirt paths you can run them instead of walking them. Otherwise in the city itself along the Rhone there are some "woods" with a small network of trails you can run through, and some uphill from time to time. Not sure how many km that'd be if you did the whole thing though, but surely others here have checked it out and might tell you?

Otherwise for the Jura in the north or the Saleve further south, you land in France so you'd have to look at French maps to figure out hiking trails. Bus routes are easily figured out through google maps if you've decided where you're heading but be ready for that fact it wont necessarily be a direct commute.

Otherwise ... you could always get a bike and make it a weekly biathalon :)

You totally understood, I'm looking for some vertical challenge! I need to prepare a 72 km race in Volvic in march. Thank you for all these info. I tried to run along l'Arve yesterday, I have to say I found some nature but after 10km+ I had to go back and no slope... I will try to run along the Rhone!

Well I saw that every sundays people from glocals organize some hiking in Saleve and that this is possible to come from GE by bus, I can try this and I will plane some stuff in the jura eventually alone if don't meet moutainers.

Ahah you know what? I thought about that, to buy a bike... I hate it but as we say in France, there are only dumb people that are not able to change their mind.

Glad you reply, thank you Ewa.

See you,

Damien

Along the southern bank a bit more ups and downs but theres also quite a segment that remains relatively levelled.

Damien, in case you haven't already discovered it, the Saleve is your best and nearest solution for vertical challenge.  From the bottom (near the base of the telepheric) to the top it's a 660m ascent.  I go up almost every weekend and I often see people running it.  You might need micro spikes near the top at this time of the year, though.  The track is fairly easy to follow, but here is a GPS trail that I recorded, which might be useful in particular for finding the start point: http://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=10275070

Salut Damien,

I'm fighting tendinitis right now, so won't go on big adventures for a while. Before I got a car, some cool things I did were...

train to St Cergue, run up la Dole (see Ewa's wanderland link),

bus to Gex, run up from there, geoportial.gouv.fr

train to Gryons, run, stay the night, run some more, return.

bus to Chamonix, lots of options.

nearly did train to Bieres, run to St Cergue, but a blizzard made me turn around.

Most of the hilly stuff will be snow-covered now. Dirt roads may be ploughed (still with a layer of hard snow) and nice to run on. And there's so, so much stuff accessible with a car. Further away stuff, I recommend staying the night if possible.

Good luck,

Neil
