I suggest you read the many posts about Holmes PLace here on Glocals and how numerous people have been less than satisfied with the contract terms and what I would classify as devious cancellation and automatic renewal policies. Be careful when you take over a contract as the original terms will apply to you.

What I will suggest in order to avoid any unwanted automatic renewal is that the day you join, give them a resignation letter.  That way its done, and you won't have any worries should you forget in a year's time.

Adding to Poster's suggestion:

Send a registered letter to HP (you can do that at the post office). Keep the receipt you get for it so you have proof and a copy of the letter they sent. And don't accept it when HP says that (a) the letter was too early and they can't process it (that's their problem not yours), or (b) they can't find your letter. Both things have happened to people, but with the proof you have you can threaten legal action and they'll let you leave.

If this practice doesn't persuade you to join HP that's fine, if it does ... there are other gyms in and around Geneva that are friendlier.
