Volunteering

Hi folks

So while I am 2 billion percent aware that Geneva has lots of international organizations a ready and willing person can volunteer at - I'm looking to do more stuff at the community level.

One of which is donate my time and (hopefully) reasonably OK baking skills to a local soup kitchen or community food programme.

Does anything like that exist in Geneva?  I get that this is the land of wealth, but surly there must be some programme to help feed those in need.

Thanks!

ps: anyone interested in joinging me you're more than welcome! I won't start until I find a flat in Geneva (currently out in the country) but once my kitchen is set up and ready, you're welcome to joing me for baking parties!

Caritas, the Centre social protestant, and the Geneva Red Cross Society all need help in sorting and pricing donated goods and in selling these in their shops.  I think they also arrange informal contact between anglophones and asylum-seekers who want to practise their English.

The Cantonal Hospital needs people to move chair- and bed-ridden patients to and from Sunday morning worship in the hospital’s chapel.

The ‘Société de la Lecture’ looks for volunteers to read in various languages, including English, to people in their own homes.

The Université Populaire de Genève welcomes unpaid teachers for their language courses.  These are held in the evening, by the way.

The ‘Coeur des Grottes’ is a shelter for women in distress, some of whom are more at ease in English than French.  Evelyne, the ‘directrice’, is fluent in English.  The shelter also has a shop in the Pâquis.

The American International Women’s Club has an extensive programme of voluntary work and could perhaps suggest other activities that they know of.

And then there are the mainstream anglophone churches in and around Geneva.  They, too, have various local projects to assist the needy.

All the best, R.

Hi Lia,

I would also love to find a regular volunteer opportunity at the community level. I used to coordinate a meal programme once a week in downtown Toronto before I moved here and really, really miss the interaction with both volunteers and guests. If there is a small group assembling to find possibilities for volunteer work, please count me in.

Hi Nathsa!

Yes! I think we're on the same page re: what kind of volunteer work we'd like to do.  Maybe we make it a combined mission? I'll send you a note.

ps: I'm from Ottawa :)
