Wages in Geneva

Apologies if this has been discussed to death, but I'm new here and entering 'salary' and 'wages' in the search box turned up nothing, so here goes ...

I've been offered a job just outside Geneva (Nyon actually) and have no idea about the cost of living in Switzerland, other than the anecdotal horror stories you hear all the time. :)

Here's my question: if I don't eat out regularly, don't party like Charlie Sheen and kick my $10,000 per night casino habit, will I be able to live a reasonably comfortable life on CHF 4'000.00 net (tax and the social/accident insurance already deducted, but not the rent and the health insurance)?

Any and all advice/opinions/guidance much appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Liam.

The federal government has a online salary calculator, although unfortunately not in English

I think this is fine. You will be able to get a comfy 2 bedroom flat outside geneva for yourself and maybe even save up some money.

your main costs will be rent and health insurance (after costs of beer of course)

health insurance is obligatory and prob will cost you about 300 or so per month.

Rent... maybe 1000 to 1500 depending on appartment. (less if you share or go the studio route)

other ancilliary costs such as mobile, travel, etc

www.comparis.ch will give you an idea of health insurtance cost.

www.immostreet.ch and www.homegate.ch for rent costs...

If you don't have a crazy/demanding lifestyle you should be able to live OK on 4k CHF net per month (for a single person). It's not luxury though. Rents can vary a lot, and will probably be have the biggest effect on your real disposable income.

The Swiss Lottery had a game called Rento ( I don't know if it still exists) in which the prize was 4k per month for life. A lot of people found it tempting.

Better look for an apartment in Nyon (def. cheaper than Geneva and no train fees to go to work) and try to get a health insurance via your company.

We have Intras that offer reasonable conditions to corporate employees.

Partying like http://www.glocals.com/members/member_profile/2207

(Sorry for this side discussion with has nothing to do with the subject)

I thought Charlie Sheen (LIam mentioned above) is you...

So you are not interested in partying, entertainment and culture, feeling most comfortable with a glass of beer, a cigarette and a lass to talk to?

Dear Liam,

No need to pay for entertainment - its all free on Glocals, 24/7, and you can stay on your couch, beer in hand, tv on,  . . . .  or maybe we could come around and join you . . . Charlie will bring the beer, me the snacks and Rena (Mistalker) the entertainment !

Personally I quite like the stalking attention.....  way better than being ignored.

And yes Liam... Geneva as with any city/town (incl Nyon) can be alot of fun...its what you make of it that counts. Open eyes and open mind = no probs...
