What is the best way to sell a car in Geneva if you have already left?

Hi, would appreciate some input from the group....

I am moving away from Geneva and want to sell my car. I have effectively already moved, and will only be back in Geneva in mid-Jan for a short time.

Any recommendations as to the best route to sell the car given that I will not be able to deal with private enquirers easily? It is an older car that still runs very well, and I want to get fair value for it - 10 year old VW Sharan 7 seater with 4 wheel drive and loads of options.

Thanks, Mike

Consider putting it in commission at a dealer.

Getting a dealer to sell it is a two-edged sword, often used by people with maybe unrealistic expectations who can't shift their metal. The catch is that if it doesn't sell (and winter is a bad time for forecourts) then your 'parking' bill snowballs over the months, unless you've managed to negotiate a fixed percentage. And I'm not sure most dealers will be falling over themselves to have a 10-year old car on their forecourt, unless their 'cut' is higher than usual.

Maybe get a friend to sell if for commission but with an incentive to shift it quickly. Time is your enemy as a car doing nothing will deteriorate and start to cost money to put right.

I would say to just price it for a quick sale.

Agree with Nicolas. Have the dealer in mind, as your last resort and in any case expect much less than the competing cars are offered for on autoscout24.ch (3700chf - 4400chf), if you want to sell it quickly and/or if you're not around.

I advertised in GHI.  I offered a silly price (chf3000) for my last car.  The guide price for that make and milage was nearly double.   It was sold to a dealer within hours of the paper coming out.  He bought it on the phone, without even seeing the thing and came round with a tow-truck a couple of hours later.  He didn't try to negotiate.  The phone didn't stop ringing all week.  I wanted to sell it quick so as to avoid wasting time with lots of viewers, and avoid negotiations, and i urgently needed the parking space for my new car.  With hindsight i could have asked more.

Hello Mike,
I'm moving over this year with my family (two kids). I was thinking about buying a left-hand drive car in the UK, getting it fully serviced and driving it over before registering it in Switzerland. I'm thinking about a 7-seater and will be over in Geneva (Nyon) in the next couple of weeks for work. When will you be around? Feel free to send me a PM with more details and we could maybe work something out that's good for both of us.
Failing that, best of luck with the sale.
Kevin
