So i have been invited to a wedding. Not from the forum dont get excited :P
Anw the problem is i have no idea what to wear. Jeans and black dresses (my idea of informal/formal clothes) are out so i need to go shopping!
Any ideas what to wear and where to find it? And also, what is the wedding etiquette in Geneva? The only person i will know there is the friend im going with. So my job will be basically to stand next to him and look cute?
Thanks :)

hello Maria,
I would advise you to check out BCBG Max Azria and
Karen Millen. I have always found what I needed in these two shops in terms
of cocktail dresses.
Good luck!

You can get some very nice formal wear at the vintage shops as this is something that people can wear once and then give away. There is a thread her with vintage shops

I've got a range of (and I do mean it!) formal dresses and gowns (long & short) that I have bought over the years for attending weddings. Labels including Vera Wang, BCBG, Betsy Johnson, Victoria Secrets etc. I was planning to take them to a second-hand shop. Most of them are size 6 and some size 4 (well,,, yeah.... before moving to cheeseland .. I was a size 4... =( .....) So... will charge no more than CHF100. All proceeds go to SOS chats Cat shelter. Colours: purple, green, black & white, red etc.. If you are interested let me know? U can pop over for a quick look.
Cheers!

Why never wear it again? Buy something you fancy (dark color are never a mistake, but you may also want to try a flasy red) is and turn it into a more formal apparel with accessories (scarf, belt, bag, hairdo, whatever...) And don't worry about etiquette as long as you drink yourself to coma. As for looking cute, no efforts needed on that side ;-) ; just enjoy the party and socialize.

I dont think a black dress is really appropriate for a wedding. Its supposed to be a happy occasion isnt it?
By the way you know the joke?
The little boy asks his mummy: "Mummy why in weddings the bride always wears white?" And the mummy answers: "Because white is the colour of joy and happiness whereas black is the colour of saddness". "A ok so thats why the groom always wears black!"

Maria: not a bad joke...(-:
Reminds me this far less good
one:
A little boy asks his daddy: daddy, why do people get grey
hairs?
Daddy replies: every time a son gives his dad a hard
time, the dad gets a few grey hairs. So that's why I have a few grey hairs. If you behave well, I
will not have a lot of them.
The son says: I wasn't asking
about you dad, I was asking about grandfathers full head of grey
hairs.

Hi Maria,
Wear something you feel comfortable and fabulous, something that represent you. A nice dress do not have to be formal and boring. You could even wear nice trousers in a nice fabric with an evening top and high heels.
On every women wardrobe, it must exist one nice and flattering evening dress for special occasions. You don't have to wait for an invitation to buy it. And as Free says, create new occasions to dress up and feel fabulous!
If you have a very nice evening dress in black, of course you can wear it. It can be sparkled with accessories, adding colour and your personality touch. You are not going to stand still and look cute, feel dynamic, energetic and socialize in the party! :) So feel truly you in what you wear.
Wear make up. Any dress will look boring and will not be completed without make up. For tips, you can go to make-up stands at the department stores and they can teach you tricks for you for free (if you get an appointment, then you must pay for the consultation).
The real cost of the dress is the price divided by how many times you wear it. And you are worth a nice evening dress, one statement dress in your wardrobe that you feel fabulous in.
- one important tip: do not buy the shoes the same day as the wedding! And do not wait too long for buying the dress. shopping under stress will ensure a bad outcome...
I know several boutiques in Geneva, with different styles and price range, you can always email me.
Have fun !

I also always wondered about wearing black at a wedding, but I think it's appropriate, especially if it's an evening wedding. I would definetely pair it with a brighter shall or some nice jewlwery and makeup. I don't have any specific recommendations as to wear you can find a nice cocktail dress, but I do think it's worth finding something that you can wear to other important occasions (especially since dresses are usually very expensive!). If you find a nice classic looking dress you will find that you can wear it to other events and then you will not have to go out and buy another dress

Always remember at a wedding, the bridesmaids always wear pink lampshades, so no matter what you wear, you will look good alongside them...
Seriously though, it does depend on the type and formality of the wedding, but generally as long as you don't look like you are going clubbing in Ibiza or appearing in court, somewhere in the middle is fine. It's the bride's day after all, so just don't outshine her....
