What were they thinking

Here are links to two cases of racism by olympians in the just concluded olympic games. I found the comments very condescending and disgusting. However, I cant help but wonder whether they were expelled due to their offensive comments or because the comments contravene the Olympic rules.

Both. The IOC has very strict rules of conduct, so that they can act decisively and quickly if an athlete crosses the line.
