What would you do?

For the second time in three years someone attempted to break into our apartment. The first time they bent the lock but didn’t manage to get the door open. Our regis told us if we wanted to replace it, we would have to foot the bill because they considered it ‘small’ maintenance and according to our contract, small repairs are our responsibility.

This time, instead of going for the lock, they used a crowbar on the wood door frame. Again it didn’t work but now our door looks like it was gnawed over by a rabid beaver.

Do we need to inform the Regis? The door isn’t pretty to look at but is still functional. We installed an additional lock so it’s unlikely anyone is going to get through but when we eventually move we don’t want to be held responsible for damage on the outside of our apartment door.

Thanks for any advice!

There is also the legal services offered in French or English where for an hour perhaps less and 50-60 CHF you can get some advice on this.

For the first attempt, I contacted the police and they told me that if no one  broke into the apartment, they wouldn't do anything. I contacted the Regis  (Comptoir Immobilier) and they told me the repair was not their responsibility. I contacted our insurance agent, Zurich insurance, and they told me that because the damage was on the 'outside' of the apartment they were not responsible for paying for repairs.

It was exasperating so I just let it go. I'm still doubtful about the whole system but I want to cover myself against liability. I'll look into filling out a police report, again.

We live near the train station.
