Hi,
I'm an American (hearing) graduate student at Gallaudet University, which is a university founded specifically for deaf and hard-of-hearing people back in the 1860s. Like all undergraduate courses and most other graduate programs, my classes are taught in American Sign Language and I enjoy being able to work and socialize with my Deaf classmates on an even communicative playing field.
I've been in Geneva for about two months now and I don't think I've ever seen someone signing. I ran a few simple Google searches and couldn't come up with anything about local Deaf clubs or schools - where are all the D/deaf people in this city? Does Swiss culture discourage the use of sign language? Are children born deaf typically fitted with cochlear implants and mainstreamed?
Thanks for your thoughts and advice.
Jessica
