Where can I buy a laptop-Not Dell
Nov 22, 2008 @ 22:11
I need to buy a laptop that "speaks" English. In the past I have used Dell but recently I have had very bad "customer care" experience with them. Does any one know another company that I can use? Thank you.

In that case, why not check out the main Manor store in downtown Geneva (closer to the train station).
Or you could check out the new Apple store on Rue du Marche.
You should be able to find people who speak English and you should be able to get software in English as well.
Good luck.

You can check out this website - www.toppreise.ch. It would give a list of shops selling the product and the product description you searched for. Check out the product description of the computer, it may give you the OS languages available.

If you are ordering a new laptop with MS Vista in Switzerland you'll find that when you 1st time you switch on you'll be asked in which langauge you want to have the operating system.. This is permanent as the other languages are then deleted.

[quote]I'm not sure if Cablecom is such a good deal, if you don't watch TV.
AFAIK, you can't get Cablecom-Internet without the TV-stuff.
Did you know that the costs for Cablecom (if your house is "connected") are usually hidden somewhere in the "Nebenkosten" / auxiliary / utility charges?
You can have the TV-plug in the wall sealed and save some bucks per months - if you don't have a TV, you should consider doing that (Why pay for a service you don't use?)
For occassional TV-consumption, Zattoo is just as good, IMO.
And radio can be had via Internet, too...

You can also install language packs after installation by downloading them from windows update. You can also assign different language packs on different users in Vista, so one user can have the whole user interface in English and another in French. Same goes for keyboards.
A thing you should keep in mind though is that the actual keyboard layout, that is the printed letters on the keys, will be QWERZ and not QWERTY as you would get in the UK or the US (or Greece for that matter). That is a real nuisance for me at least.

Actually having a qwertz keyboard is much easier if at sometime you attempt to write in French as all the accented letters are already labeled, also if you have to work in Geneva on a keyboard it will be this way.. I have both QWERTY & QWERTZ laptops at home , and I find it's a little like having to get used to driving on the wrong side of the road here (I'm from the UK) after a short time it doesn't really matter switching from one to another as my fingers seem to make the switch for typing automatically..

Well it was bad enough having to get used to a UK layout when I lived in Scotland (you know, Shift+2 should be @, and not " ffs) but French/German layouts are way beyond me! At work I have a US and a CH layout and at home I also have a US and CH layout on my laptops. And I get away by just typing without looking, otherwise it gets really confusing:)
