Where to live in Geneva.

Hi All,

This is my first post on here to a big hello to everyone on here.

I am going to be moving to Geneva at the end of March (from London) and have started looking for apartments on the net and have found quite a few real estate websites. However i am unsure of what areas in geneva i should be avaoiding (unsafe areas?).

Would anyone be able to advise me on what would be a good area for a 27yr old single male with a budget of 3000chf? (I'm ideally looking for a 1-2 bedroom apartment). Thanks!

I wouldn't say that any particular area is dangerous per se, Geneva is not considered a very dangerous city muggin/robbery wise etc... A little worse these days with the borders open, but you can quite safely walk around just about part of town.

Some areas may not be quite as "nice" as others, but they have their own advantages of costing considerably less. Say for example the "Tour de Lignon" area which has some of the biggest appartment complexes around. It looks a bit "menacing" at night, not a place I really feel like walking around when the sun goes down, but I've never had a problem there (got a friend who lives there, so I visit quite often). Prices here are also very low.

What you really should be looking at is good public transport connectivity. Best is if you're within walking distance from a Tram. Or if there's a bus which takes you to a major hub such as Rive, Cornavin, Bel Air etc... Also take into consideration how quickly and easily you can get to your office.

Unfortunately, Geneva housing is so terrible these days that you'll spend considerably time just finding an appartment and being accepted by the landlord. I'm afraid the story here is that, you really can't be too picky :(

Anyway, good luck and you can always post questions here if the area you're looking at is nice or not. Everyone may have something to chip in about the location such as shopping, public transport, nightlife/bars, gym's, etc...

Thanks for your input Heikki! Wow! i've just been reading other peoples experiences of trying to find a place to rent and it seems like it can be a real torturous task!

WHat about areas just outside of Geneva? CAn anyone recommend any of those?

Thanks Again,
