Why do grocery stores close so early here?

Is it actually illegal for grocery stores to be open in the evenings or on weekends?  I'm assumig it is.  If so - who's advocating for it?  The grocery employee's union?

Earlier this year there was a 2 day stretch (a Sunday and a religious holiday) during which the groceries were closed, and not having planned for that, it was difficult!  Also finding time in general for shopping for working parents is tough.

Just curious!

thanks,

Sylvia

You can shop at the Migros at the airport which is open on Sundays and has later evening hours.

I will let others explain about the store hours situation....

Switzerland is a democracy where the "people" vote on everything, and even though a few votes have been held in the past few years on this subject the people have voted against longer opening hours or sunday shopping...

The idea behind it is that 1) sunday is a religeous day (for whats it worth) and 2) they think that people would be exploited on time and salary if asked to work on sundays.

the swiss populous seem happy that shops are only open till 6pm on weekdays and 9pm on Thurs and closed on sundays...and frankly its mainly the foreigners that complain, ie those used to shopping in major cities on a sunday...

cest la vie ici... thats it..nothing to be done except get used to it and plan better...OR shop in France at the Sunday markets or Carrefour in Ferney and Divonne... :-)

Mothers are supposed to be at home taking care of food provisions for the family - OR you take your huge, bulky family car to an out of town supermarket to stack up on stuff you mostly don't need,on a Saturday.

If you are one of those weird people that does not conform to the 9-5pm routine with stay-at-home partner....well,life get's a bit difficult.it's one of the "reasons why Switzerland is wonderful"(see another thread of this tendency).....Cool

I had to explain to a workaholic boss that the reason why I cannot join him in his evening stay-fest is because, unlike him, I do not have a wife at home who can go to the bank and the grocery store.

As for the opening hours, the younger Swiss seem to support longer store hours but they're out-voted by the pensioners (coughcoughAHEM) elderly guardians of Swiss lifestyle and tradition.  Unless they figure out how to vote from the grave, the country will eventually modernise.  Might take a while...

An other solution could be using coop@home they can drop your groceries at a time convenient for yourself and you can order from home... frees more time up to do fun stuf!

I personally love the fact that the shops are closed on sunday. Actually spending time with the family in stead of going again around to "the shops" Spending the day at the lake, in the mountains, at a sunday market.... great things which loads of people wouldn't do if these bloody shops where open on a sunday!

I'm really not sure that it's only the old people who think this way here. I always lived there so I'm not really in a good position to judge (it has always been like that, so I just plan around), but I know that many young swiss people would try to protect some people by voting agaisnt extended hours. By the way, it improved a bit over the past years. When I was a kid, many places were closed, at least partly, on moday, if I remember correctly. Then, shops could open later thursday. Then, closing times were changed from 5 to 6 on saturdays.

Actually, I think it more or less comes to judging what has the most weight between something a little bit annoying to many people (having to shop at more restrictive hours) vs something much more annoying but for much less people  (having to work evening/sundays). Also, I'm not even sure that shop owners (big ones, coop, migros, globus, etc) would really be interrested in larger hours. It means more salaries to give probably, but maybe not that much more income.

By the way, apart from what what already mentionned, Leshop.ch (Migros) and the little aperto supermarket in the Cornavin railway station are options for some little last minute shopping.

Personally think that it is a good idea to keep the current hours and days as is.

Keeps Its better for current Migros, COOP, Manor employees in better living , and less long working hours.

I also apreciate that on Sunday we put time into personal interest.

If not we are always stressed to do 'MORE', work more, etc.

Again personally convenience is at what cost, who looses and gains?

Out of Geneva in smaller cities, in France and Switzerland alot of stores are closed from 12 to 14h00, so we do benefit from lunch time open hours. Also on later Thursdays In Geneva. This is not same in other Swiss Cities.

Small baby steps are good changes/compromises.

Because sellers have a life and family.

Employees earn enought and didn t need work later hours. Fortunatly.

But in France you can find any groceries opens.

To my understanding:

If a Swiss company does not employ people to sell their stuff late at night or during the week ends they can stay open (Reka, please correct me if I am wrong ;) That's why there are some small shops like in the Paquis area which serve even fruits and vegetables day and night.

Coop is trying to avoid this 8-19 h regulation with more and more airport/service station/station shops. According to their management a very profitable solution.

("If a company in Switzerland does not employ people to sell their stuff during the week ends": I meant if the boss works him/herself)

Silly question, where is the Migros in the Airport? I pass through there 4 times a month with blinkers on, and generally come home starving to an empty fridge. Handy one..

For the small shops, it's because if I'm correct, you can have any hours you want if it's your own shop, but you're not supposed to have employees working during these extra hours, or something like that.
