Worth going to France for car repairs?

I got a list of things to fix on my 2003 Nissan Primera after the safety inspection. The local mechanic (Euromaster in Versoix) quoted me around CHF 2500 (tires, brake pads, exhaust replacement, etc).

Is it worth going to France to get a better price?

If so, where would you go? Ideally it would be somewhere not too close to the border (I'm assuming close to the border means Geneva prices anyway?), with lots of competition, where you won't get screwed over just because you don't speak French, and where you can take the train back. Lyon perhaps?

Thankful for any advice!

Hey there,

Its worth it. YOu can go to Feuvert in Annemasse or Ferney-Voltaire.  Changing tires in a small garage in Geneva costs about 100CHFs, in Feuvert you get it done 20% cheaper, 20% of 2500 is 500 CHFs... The further you go the cheaper it gets.

During Christmas I drove to Portugal and fixed a bump in Portugal for 100 EURs after having an estimation for 450 EURs in Annemsse and in Lyon, they told me they would charge 200-250, but I couldn't wait 3 days for the repair.

If you can drive to spain... is about 8 hours drive, you probably get it done for less than a 1000 and the savings can pay your vacation ;-)

hope it helps

My friend had a car broken (it was hard to go back). The repairment of gearbox costed him 5000 CHF in Switzerland and around 4000 euros in nearby France and Germany.

I helped him to do it in Poland for 1250 euros, including cleaning of amortisation, oils etc., travel time around 12 hours and cost around 150 euros for petrol to get there.
