i have already had several private messages from people with various names of these "charming individuals" using glocals as a free dating website, against the other parties consent... some people take a polite hello as an acceptance to satisfy their unfulfilled needs...

this is not just a man on woman issue, but it is pretty low when common courtsey is now mistaken as flirting or entertaining these people

so what do we do, all become chickens, disable our chat and hope for the best?!

 My wife gets harrased by hard up perverted bankers when she logs in, me I stay pretty tranquil.

perhaps glocals should code in the blocking option available on facebook.

In the meantime I suggest ignoring these individuals. They are not worth even this thread.

yeah i did laugh, i think i scared him when i offered him a months supply of kleenex and some interesting websites...

the thing is, there are people out there, alone and genuinely looking for friends and who may cease to use glocals because of nuisance characters like those i have already been told about..

it's not acceptable that people feel inhibited by individuals like this...

i can take a joke with the best of them but there are some folk who really feel uncomfortable with this...

perhaps it's a tongue-in-cheek post, but if one person gets the hint then that's one more happy, stress free glocals member which is no bad thing :)

I like the block individuals option, although from experience, most harassers stop trying after 3 or 4 times...everytime I get a chat request I just ignore it if its from one of 'these guys'!! :) Eventually they do get the message!

I think the reason why there are so many creaps here is because there are many girls who fall for them. Otherwise they would be here. The fact there are so many here means it works out for them sometimes.

Letting them slither about on this site and harass with impunity is only going to deter women from logging on and taking part in this site. Hardly fair, or good for business. 

Oded: Just put a voting button in the chat. After a set number of "Nah"s, the profile can't chat anymore for some time. "Yay"s shouldn't count for anything, other than for ego ;)

Seriously, the "chat horn dogs" topic is one that's very important to me and Oded. To date we relied on 2 key things to battle this:

- we changed the chat default setting to "only my friends can chat with me".

- encouraging members to immediatly report bad behaviour (in which case we take quick action)

We're reading this thread closely to come up with more ideas.

Online dating is an awesome way of meeting people,i think it takes real bravery to do, however, it requires charm, effort and something where the interest can longer than 2 seconds.. clearly not for the glocals sleazebags out there... it's  much easier to just look at a picture and assume that the person wants you and will accept your advances, right?

Following Nir's post, I have a question and a comment.

Question - since the chat default setting is 'Only my friends can chat with me' - why not revert back to the default setting if you're getting a lot of chat requests from creeps?

I don't understand the thread?  What's wrong with just clicking 'ignore' if you don't know the guy? (or girl I guess)???  Guys always try their luck, they have to, they get knocked down more often than not - so making approaches might need more than one angle, hiding behind a profile (or a few beers)!!  That said, there are pervs too but in that case (if you choose not to ignore and they go all creepy psycho on you), report them!

I agree with Alison. I simply ignore the people I don't know and chat only with friends. It works well and no time wasting. The good thing with Glocals is that unlike other social networking website, you actually get to meet people... I never saw anyone so far having the nerve to harass someone publicly at an event.

Know what happened next? serial chatters still find a way! I started receiving really smoooooth private messages from them. And yes they only look at your photo and don't bother reading even your tagline, mine is specially dedicated to them, asking them to get lost! and they still try! :O

So, just ignore them and concentrate on the fun/interesting aspects of Glocals :)

In the profile section of relationship status can we also add engaged? Since for some people if you put in a relationship, its the same as being single. Other and private also are taken to be meant single.

I dont want to restrict my chat to friends only but i dont feel comfortable to have status as married. Yet :P

More to the point: I've been a member of Glocals for about a year now and I have NEVER been contacted via chat. Not by nice girls (or not-so-nice girls), not even by guys. How do you think it makes me feel if all of you are complaining about the attention you're getting?

There *is* a difference between 'attention' or giving a compliment and 'harassment.' When the same four or five guys repeatedly message me asking to go out, I don't consider it some attention I should be 'lucky to get' because I happen to be young. 

And why should I have to put a restrictive barrier in place that would prevent people who have a legitimate need to contact me, such as future interns with an NGO I used to work at? Theres a reason why chat is there - because they don't want to bother with an email. Why should I have to be the one to restrict my options when its some horny guy who is causing the problem?

I’d have to agree with you on this point as to what defines 'Harrassment'. In the UK it’s very easy to determine where the boundaries lie as we have the Protection against Harrassment Act 1997:

I don't agree, and I'm not just saying this to get al the cute girls on my side.

I remember that in the past I used to get messages from people I didn't know in Skype. Normally beautiful Eastern European blondes, at least that's what their picture showed. It happened only occasionally, but it really pissed me off.

So if girls/women here are really contacted regularly I can understand their frustration.

The solution has already been mentioned: report the perverts (especially if they don't accept 'no'), and take action if they do it on more than a few occasions.

At the same time I don't think we should close the door completely. If I'd be single and I'd see an attractive woman on Glocals who lived in my town, and she's also single, I'd be tempted to ask her to meet.

I am new to glocals and this is the first thread I happen to see!

I have a number of questions regarding glocals and otherwise and so decided to ask random people and get online answers but gosh after seeing this thread I was thrilled to do so because I hate to be embarressed.

Now is it also problematic to message men? Will I not be accused of boy hunting?

I would be much happier if my first encounter with glocals was a bit more relaxed and a bit more welcoming...........
