broken camera - what to do?

noticed to my great despair that my camera (a canon powershot g9) has suddenly stopped working, without known reason. i thought that it might be nice to document my son's first christmas, so i'm a bit desperate to have it fixed before christmas eve.

does anyone know of a place that fixes broken cameras in geneva and that's not too expensive? would be very grateful for any tips!

thanks,

charlotta

i don't know of any off-hand, but if i'm not mistaken, that's a point-and-shoot camera and the times i've (or friends of mine) wanted to get one of them repaired, the repair place said it's not worth it, get a new one.

but, what exactly is the problem you're experiencing? Hate to ask an obvious question, but have you tried putting in fresh batteries? Sometimes it's as simple as that.

oh no! i love my camera and i can't afford to buy a new one! i don't know what a point-and-shoot camera is, but here's a link to what it loks like: http://tinyurl.com/ycg422d .

the problem is that it's completely dead - it does nothing when i press the power button. i've tried charging the battery and taking it out and putting it back in several times but nothing happens. i haven't tried another battery since i only have one and it's a rechargeable one, but perhaps i should go to some camera shop and have them try another one to see if it's the battery that's the problem (if they are kind enough to do so without selling it to me first)?

well, thanks for your reply anyway, zonker!

point-and-shoot is a hobbyist camera, like the one you have, as opposed to an SLR or dSLR with changeable lenses and other accessories.

Yes, I would try a new battery at the store. Failing that, maybe they know where to get Canon cameras serviced.

I just found something on the Canon site about how to recognize fake batteries - maybe you have a fake one and it's bad? Go here. There is also a link there, at the bottom, to contact Canon Service. Presumably, they can direct you to an authorized Canon dealer/repair shop.

You might want to find a friend with a camera, just in case it's not ready in time.

Hello Charlotta,

I have a Canon G10 which I bought at Photo Hall in Geneva.  They are very knowledgeable and helpful.   It's in the tram street near Bel Air...    You are welcome to borrow mine if you need it for Christmas as I wont be using it... : )

wow, thanks both for your helpful replies! i didn't know about those fake ones, but i don't think mine is one of those since i've had it for nearly 2 years and it's worked fine until now.  good to know though in case i have to  buy a new one.

i will try the photo hall and see what they think. it's very kind of you to offer to lend me your camera over christmas, mozambique! i think i should have my old one lying around somewhere, but if i can't find it, i'll get back to you.

have a nice christmas!

it's this kind of friendly, helpful, caring, giving atmosphere that makes glocals so cool.
