buy or lease a car in Geneva?

Hi all,

My husband and I are new to the area, here to work at CERN for the next two years. We are looking for a good car for our time here...Seems like it's not hard to buy a used car, but we also met some friends who leased a car from ROC in Vernier. Is it better to buy or lease a car here, if we're only here two years? Thoughts? Experience to share?

Hi Callie and welcome to Geneva and to glocals.

I'm wondering the same thing myself (Lease vs Buy) so hoping we'll get some good advice here.

Anyone?  Anyone?  Buller?  Anyone?

You have to take different things into account, as you know you may buy a car cash, with a lease, or a personnal credit.

Knowing that you will be here for two years and depending of your work permit, I'm not sure that you may go for the lease optionthat are usually for 3 years duration...

but it doesn't cost to ask.

For those that are interested, I have found few weeks ago a great article in french that compares the advantages of buying a car with a lease or a personnal credit.

Personnal credit may not always be interesting due to high interests, but in some case it is a better option than a lease. car price, duration, type of work permit, etc...

The article is in french, so if anyone is interested, I'm willing to take some time to put a hand on it and share it with you.

Thanks for the replies! We have the cash to buy a car if we go that route, but thought that if we could lease it would be easier than trying to resell when we leave. We currently have work contracts at CERN and carte de legitimations that are good for the next two years.

We heard from a couple friends that got a car lease that their lease was for four years but they had the option to end it early, they would just lose equity or pay a fee or something (I'm a little unclear on that). Before meeting them, I hadn't thought that leasing was even an option in Switzerland. So now I'm curious.

So if we could lease, I see the advantages as being 1) the limited time warranty on the car not breaking down, and 2) the ease of releasing the car when we move away. But that's a good point about the length of time. We'll probably try to go to ROC in the next couple days and ask questions. Seems like if we buy we'd just do cash rather than credit.

Other thoughts? Or anyone else?

Perhaps have a chat with these people.  They seem to have built a business around expats and their car issues.
