buying a car, acquiring plates, parking etc...

Hi!

I have long been thinking of buying a car as it would save me tons of time on my commute. I have parking at work, but I live in Eaux Vives. I also don't have the first clue about the process of what to do once I acquire a car.

So, whether I lease, buy, or buy secondhand privately, what is the next step? Do the plates come with the car? With whom do I register the car? How do I get the doohickey that allows me to park on the street ? (Because apparently, I can't put my name on a waiting for a parking space until I actually have a car) What does this mean for my taxes (will they go up)?

In other words, how much of a pain in the neck is car ownership going to be when weighed against cutting my morning commute from 45min to less than 15 AND that I can jump in the car and go visit places at will? :)

Many thanks for any expert advice or tips or a step by step Kate proof guide. :)

The car doesn't come with number plates, you get yours when you register the car on your name. When you lease or buy a car from a "garage" they will typically handle the process for you (not free). When you have signed for the car you need to contact an insurance agent and insure the car, they will give you a certificate that you need to have the number plates issued. Insurance premium varies greatly depending on the type of car and your driving history.

You need to pay yearly tax for your car, the amount depends solely on your car's engine power. If your car has more than 229g CO2 emissions the tax is 50% more expensive.

The parking space rental is pretty much a market in itself, you can rent a private space ingyour building or other buildings on your street, in a public or private parking, het the neighborhood macaroon (doesn't guarantee you will find parking) or just park it on the street for free overnight and leave it at your work over the weekend when you're not using it.

I couldn't do without a car but it's a matter of personal preference.

1) Find a car, but you probably know already how to do it. Autoscout24.ch can help find one however. If you need a leasing, the car seller or your bank can find one for you.

2) find an insurance, as it's needed to have one before getting the plates (if you need infos about this you can mail me at [email protected]) The insurance will send an attestation to the SAN (see link higher, it's the state office for cars).

3) go there to get your plates. Your taxes won't go up (no matter if you fill a declaraton or are taxed "at the source"), but you'll have to pay as stated higher a yearly tax for your car. The rates are here: http://www.ge.ch/san/baremes-d-impots/welcome.asp?titre=baremes_d__impots

4) if you don't rent a private parking place, but want to park for an unlimited time in the blue zone of your neighboorood, you need a macaron. You can find infos here: http://www.ge.ch/parkings/macarons.html it's not easy at all to find a place in Eaux-Vives in these zones however.

5) Drive and enjoy :)
