Nickie, you'll find SLR's about anywhere from discount joints (Interdiscount) to large department stores (Globus, Manor) and pro photo shops. The real question is what exactly you want/need and how much you are willing to pay... and new models are released about every week, complicating your choice :w00t:
as a seasoned amateur I found that many salesfolks take you "for a ride" when you arrive with the open question "what cam is best for me today". It is most profitable to resolve this equation first then go shop the model of your choice
This said, the choice between SLR and standard digitals is only a matter of habit. I have a large collection of both, quality of pics cannot be distinguised (at least between the high end ones). The SLR thing is more a die-hard habit of old photographers (like me) that cannot believe a simple chip can see as well as a crystal-and-eye... (and can't help it, I like to hear the mirror hitting the stops, sounds so pro lol...)

Hey,
I have recently been looking for a camera in Geneva so I cannot specifically tell you of anywhere in Zurich, but I would suggest if you have an interdiscount in Zurich, then try them, they have a pretty good sale on at the moment.
I would tell you to definitely avoid manor! there prices on cameras are way over the top, even more so than fnac's.
Maybe try online? Perhaps find a model you like in a shop, then go home and buy it online, thats often where the best prices are, also its an idea to read reviews on cameras, try somewhere like cnet.com for reviews.

hi nickie,
once you know which body/lens you want, have a look on the website www.microspot.ch, it is runed by coop, i bought many stuf from them including my nikon d300, flash, filters and some lenses. they are safe (delivery, sale and paiement), never had anything negative to say. you can also use the price comparator www.toppreise.ch to find an even cheaper one.
cheers,

The what they charge for camera equipment here is OUTRAGOUS. I would say almost double what I would be paying in the states or Canada (where I'm from). I am a photographer and I haven't purchased a thing in Switzerland since I moved here. I either pick things up when I'm back in North America or order online. I bought a lens in Canada for about 800 CHF that was 1300 CHF in Geneva.
Try B&H from New York. They are one of the biggest online (and brick and mortar) retailers of camera equipment for consumers and pros.
I just checked, they do ship to Switzerland.

Let me know if you need any help deciding on gear!

sorry jesse to controduce you, but your online shop in the US isn't cheaper than the one i usually buy from here.
for example, the nikon d300 i bought is 1'799.35 CHF :
http://www.microspot.ch/microspot/product/App._photo_num._reflex/0000241930/Nikon_D300_-_Appareil_photo_numerique_-_Reflex_-_1/detail.jsf?current=5&DCSext.Ref=
and at the dealer you refer the camera is at 1'799.95 USD
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/518489-REG/Nikon_25432_D300_SLR_Digital_Camera.html
which actually, with the exchange rate, the import taxes and delivery fee, makes the local delaer much cheaper...

I was referring to the camera-shops here regarding the outrageous prices. I will definitely give your website a try next time I need something.
Thank you for your help, but they were for Geneva and i am in Zurich but i will have a look and see if they have those shops here
Once again Thank you:D
www.digitec.ch - if you know what you want and just need the best price.
They have a show-room and pickup-places but also offer free delivery for everything except I think for large plasma screens ;-)
There are various specialized shops in Zurich, though:
http://zuri.net/branchen/5253/fotoartikel_.htm
If you need professional advice, Digitec may not be the best option. Also, returns and RMAs are a big hassle in Switzerland and with digitec seemingly moreso.
Personally, I would look at entry-level Canon models - but my needs have not yet exceeded the capabilities of my Fuji Finepix f50.
