considering a move to Geneva

Hi! I live in the US (in Seattle) and we're considering a move to Geneva. I'll be in the city on January 19th and 20th - and would love to grab coffee with anyone willing to share their experience of moving to Geneva.

I'm particularly interested in:
-what Geneva is like for families (we have 3 small children (4, 4, and 5 years old)
-how easy it is to adjust - and in particular integrate into the city/meet people/etc.
-what the different neighborhoods are like

Thanks so much!

Van

Hi Van,

Welcome (potentially)! I'm also transplanted from the Seattle area... I won't be around the end of next week to meet up, but feel free to send me a private message with some questions and I'll give you what insight I have.

Geneva is very much what you make of it - some embrace it, make an effort and love it. Some expect Geneva to make an effort for them and get disappointed. Personaly, I think for a family with young kids like yours, Geneva and its locaction/proximity to so many things is ideal.

Best,

Matt

I think glocalers would find it easier to give advice and tips if you explained what you will be doing and where in Geneva.

Thanks, R.

Hi Ritchie,

Thanks for your advice!  We haven't picked out a neighborhood in Geneva yet - will likely depend on where we put the kids into school - so the "where" is very much up in the air - although our preference is to be closer in to the city we think.  The primary purpose of my visit next week is to spend as much time as possible exploring the city and schools to help inform that decision.

Thanks,

Van

First, are you thinking of private or state schools?  If the latter, housing comes first:  you find somewhere to live and then the local education authority allocates the school(s) the children are to attend.

Private education is obviously more flexible but, given the high demand for places, dove-tailing the school’s location with that of your home is not always so easy.

That said, your forthcoming visit will give you much more insight into the realities of the local situation, so happy hunting.
