customs duty waiver in importing household goods

Hi,

I received my household goods from London and also received a notice to pay customs duty, VAT etc. I understand that import of household goods is duty-free if declared at the time of import. Can I know get a waiver if I produce the required documentationa and what will be the documents required?

Thanks in advance!

Parth

I've just ordered a bed in the UK to be delivered here in a few weeks - would also be keen to know the situation. I had just assumed that normal customs rules apply and that I would get charged 8% of the chf price, using their well dodgy 1.80 chf to gbp exchange rate.

Hopefully someone on here knows well the sitution Parth is describing

Parth, a copy of form 18.44 should have accompanied the cargo.  I don't know if it can be retroactively submitted.

Thanks for that form Richard. I translated it and looks like it is only suitable for people who have just moved into the country, and not me Cry   Oh well... worth a try! ;)

Parth - go to google.ch  and type "form 18.44". the first one on the list is the pdf version - you will need to translate from German. Sorry I couldnt post link!

I got screwed on this one too. I had my books shipped from the U.S., books that I have had forever. US Postal Service didn't tell me anything about it, so I ended up paying 133 CHF customs duty and VAT! Sucks! And thanks guys for letting us know about the form.

Item description:  Gift (+name of item).

Value: Write lower value than original.

If the item is a believable gift (a bed might be hard to pass as such), then you may pay 0.- at the border.

The post office in Ferney will rent you a postal box .. for very few euros.

The UK / US etc deliveries can go there,... and you get an email from the post office telling you when the goods have arrived, and can go collect,.

Of course this way you dont manage to dodge the UK 17.5% VAT since its a "within EU" delivery.... but its worth it on goods that you have not paid tax on.
